November. When the nominating committee approaches you for an officer’s job, please accept and run. Experience at the “grass roots” gives you an excellent picture of just what William Penn fraternalism is all about. The election of officers of Branch 28 for the coming new year (1984!) will be held on December 12, 1983 at Our Lady of Hungary Church Hall, Belle Vista Ave., at 7:30 P.M. We would like to see more members become active and run for one of the offices. We need new and young blood to keep Branch 28 going. Secondly, the 40th National Bowling Tournament is now history. Branch 28 did win a few dollars. The Women’s #1 Team consisting of Irene Nemeth, Susan Nemeth, Mary Maty, Vera Szökés, Mary Skebo came in 8th place. While in Detroit, this reporter also attended the Scholarship Foundation meeting. It was well attended and the officers of the foundation were well pleased with the progress of the operation. They would like to see more members donate to this worthy cause. Just use your premium notices—a very convenient way of donating. At this time we take the opportunity to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. John Dankovich on their 55th wedding anniversary. It was an event of July 3rd and they were honored with a family dinner hosted by their children and their spouses. The event took place at the Edgehill Drive home of their son and daughterin-law, John and Sally Dankovich, who hosted the affair with the couple’s other children, Ed and Vera Gabrick of Struthers, Marian and Bill Palomaki, Struthers, and Lou Dankovich and Tom and Irene Junkin, all of Youngstown. The meal was served by the couple’s 13 grandchildren in the family room overlooking the pool. Mr. Dankovich and the former Veronica Szakacs were married July 3, 1928, in St. Stephen of Hungary Church. Mr. Dankovich retired in 1964 as a carpenter, and Mrs. Dankovich retired five years ago as a cook for the Franciscan Monastery, Belle Vista Avenue. He is a member of St. Stephen of Hungary Church, and she is a member of the American Hungarian Reformed Church. Both belong to the Hungarian Churches Senior Citizens. We wish them many more years of love and blessings. Branch president Mike Tomcsak wishes to announce that the 3rd Annual Golf Tournament will be held September 17th at Spring Lakes. One member of the family has to be of Hungarian descent to be eligible to play. In the past it has been a huge success and is a good place to spend a day. It may seem a little too early, especially on these hot days, to think about our branch’s family Christmas party but your branch officers have decided to announce that WE WILL have our annual family Christmas party again this year. Your response to this event has been very heart warming. So mark this down on your calendar. It will be held on Sunday, December 11, 1983 at 3 P.M. PROMPT. The affair will be held at the American- Hungarian Citizen’s Club, 21 New Schley St., Garfield, N.J. Should you need directions, please call (201) 471-9852 after 6 P.M. At this time, the 40th National Bowling Tournament, which was hosted by Branch 18, Detroit, Mich., is just a pleasant memory. From reliable reports, there were some disappointments due to the old enigma. The pins were not falling as expected. They were all winners though, being part of this reunion of old friends in a congenial atmosphere. May 7th, 1983, was a memorable day for the Szemes family. The reason, the wedding of our grandson Stephen Paul Jr. to Tracy Lynn Jones, both of Emporium, Pa. It was a beautiful day for the happy event. There were over 200 guests in attendance. Stevie is the oldest son of Stephen and Estelle Szemes. He is a member of the Wm. Penn along with his four sisters and little brother. We are happy to extend our best wishes for a lovely couple. We held our District 9 meeting on Sat., May 14th, at which time Steve Szemes was nominated and elected Delegate to the National Convention. Joseph Karoly and John Mikula were nominated as alternates. Mr. Mikula declined the nomination, as a result, Mr. Karoly was elected alternate delegate. It was like old times, on Sunday, June 12th, when a large group of friends attended the testimonial dinner to honor Mr. Michael Hegedűs of New Brunswick, N.J. Mr. Hegedűs retired as National Director after many years of dedicated service in various capacities with the Wm. Penn. Representatives from the Home Office and area branches paid tribute to a very deserving person and good friend. 24
