Branch 226 Golf Tournament Super success is the only way to describe the golf tournament hosted by Branch 226 in McKeesport, Pa. on July 9 at Riverview Golf course in Elizabeth, Pa. The tournament was open to members and friends of William Penn. Fifty-five golfers participated in the event, while ninety-four people attended the dinner at the Youghiogheny Country Club. The golf tournament was co-chaired by Les and Barbara Botkin. Mrs. Botkin, who was chiefly responsible for organizing the tournament and dinner, got all the golfers started off on #1 hole while Ed Rietski registered the players and John Sabo presented each person with a new William Penn Pinnacle golf ball. The golf balls were donated by Director John Sabo. Les Botkin, a PGA Golf Professional, drove the ball for each foursome on #1 tee. Players had the option of using Les’ drive or their own drive. Most of the golfers were elated to use Les’ drive as first hole jitters tended to make some of the players “a litte erratic”. The Pro videotaped each golfer and showed the film during the cocktail hour at the Youghiogheny Country Club. Thank you to General Counsel, Gay Banes, for entertaining the non-golfers at Youghiogheny during the day. The dinner hour began with each guest receiving a free cocktail, courtesy of William Penn Branch 226. Committee members Violet Lenart, Ethel Sabo, Anna May Rietski, and Ann Siebert, seated the dinner guests at their assigned candlelit tables. The twelve lovely gingham bow wreath centerpieces were created by Barbara Botkin and her mother-in-law Lois Botkin. The centerpieces, complete with hurricane glass and candles, were given as door prizes. Thanks to Auditor, Violet Lenart, for donating the $150.00 needed to pay for the centerpiece materials. Branch Treasurer, Mrs. Lenart also handled the finances for the tournament. Thank you also to Mr. Sabo who donated bottles of spirits to award as doorprizes and to William Penn Association for the donation of pens, sponges and cookbooks for favors and doorprizes. After a delicious buffet dinner featuring prime rib, stuffed chicken breast, and seafood newburg, Director John Sabo, who served as toastmaster, introduced committee members and distinguished guests: President of William Penn, Elmer Charles; Vice President, John Balia; Secretary- Treasurer, Gus Nagy; Directors, Albert Stelkovics, William Kohut, Elmer Toth; General Counsel, Gay Banes; and Auditors, Violet Lenart and Emma Beganyi. John Sabo also introduced distinguished guests from the Catholic Knights of St. George, President, John Kenawell; Vice President, Peter Kuhn; and Acting Secretary, Fred Maitz. President Elmer Charles hailed the success of the tournament and complimented co-chairpersons Les and Barbara Botkin on a noteworthy fraternal event. One thousand dollars worth of prizes were awarded to 24 golfers. Thanks to Les Botkin for supplying the golf prizes at cost to the William Penn Branch 226.
