CITATIONS DINNER The spacious and refreshingly airconditioned Bessemer Hall, United Church of Christ, Bridgeport, Conn., was the site of the Citations Dinner held for four present or past Officers of Branch 1. For meritorious and faithful fraternal service to the William Penn Association and in particular Branch 1, the Board of Directors conferred upon Mrs. Elizabeth Messinger, Messrs. Stephen J. Varga, Edward Behuncik and John McCarthy, the Illustrious Citation Award, the highest recognition the Board can bestow upon a deserving Branch Officer. Approximately two hundred friends and relatives gathered Wednesday, July 8, 1981 to pay tribute to the honorees. The Officers of Branch 1 are to be commended and congratulated for arranging such a nice social evening. Due to the illness of Branch President and Director, Frank Bero, Mr. John T. Lesko, Branch Vice President and Director, assumed the duties of Master of Ceremonies. On behalf of the Officers and Branch members, he extended greetings to all who came for this event. He then called upon Rev. Dr. John Butosi, Bishop Calvin Synod, Pastor United Church of Christ for the invocation. The Ladies of the Church headed by Julia Bero and Leona Banacowski served a delicious roast chicken dinner enjoyed by all. Following the dinner, Mr. Lesko called upon retired National Secretary, Albert J. Stelkovics, Director, for remarks on behalf of the Officers and Directors. Included in his remarks were words of welcome to the former American Life and former American Hungarian Catholic Society members present. He also expressed the fond hope that at the next Branch 1 function, he could also welcome the Hungarian Reformed Federation members to the new Consolidated American Hungarian Society. Mr. Stelkovics also read a congratulatory telegram sent by National President, Elmer Charles, to the honorees. Mr. Lesko then presented to Mr. Edward J. Behuncik his citation. In accepting the citation, Mr. Behuncik explained how he, as an active Slovak also became active in the William Penn Association. Mr. John Woodworth, Treasurer, Branch 1, recited the many services rendered by Mr. McCarthy to the Branch, then presented him with the citation. In his remarks of thanks, Mr. McCarthy recalled the many former Branch 1 Officers he had worked with and how through their enthusiastic activities, he decided to join the Rákóczi Aid Association. Rev. Dr. John Butosi, Bishop Calvin Synod; National Vice President, Louis L. Varga; Albert J. Stelkovics. National Vice President, Louis L. Varga, was then called upon to make the presentation to Mrs. Elizabeth Messinger. To this day, she is active in the Branch, St. Emery’s Church and the Senior Citizens Group. Mrs. Messinger accepted the award with appreciation. She has enjoyed working for the Association and intends to do so for as long as she is able. The award to Mr. Stephen J. Varga was awarded by Director Stelkovics. They were close friends for many decades. Mr. Stelkovics enumerated the many achievements of Mr. Varga both within and outside the fraternal field.
