Ralph C. Dare Presents John Jordan Upchurch A ward To Albert St elk o vies It is a real pleasure to serve on a special Committee appointed by the President to select a fraternalist to receive the John Jordan Upchurch Award. Our Committee included Charles B. Wagner, Stephanie Wochock, Joseph J. Miller and myself. John Jordan Upchurch is recognized as the father of the Fraternal Benefit System. He organized the first lodge of a fraternal benefit society on October 27, 1868, in Meadville, Pa. So we all can be proud to say that the birth of Fraternal Benefit Societies was in Pennsylvania, a real fraternal state. In fact, one of the John Jordan Upchurch workers was Dr. James M. Bunn. He was the first President of my society, the Artisans Order of Mutual Protection in 1873. This award is a recognition by the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress for distinguished service to Fraternalism. The Award was officially adopted by the Executive Committee of our Congress on June 13, 1977, and the first award was presented to Thomas R. Balaban in 1977 and the second one was presented to me in 1978. The award recognizes the fraternal activity of the person. It is not merely for his work of many years in his own Society, but primarily for this work in the fraternal system. The person to receive the award tonight has been President of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress, was President of the secretaries section of the National Fraternal Congress, has taken an active part in the New Jersey Fraternal Congress, New York Fraternal Congress, as well as other State Congresses. He has been Secretary of his own society for 40 years. Our Award is to be presented to our good friend, Albert J. Stelkovics— William Penn Association. BIRTHDAY EVERY 4 YEARS? It has puzzled persons bom on February 29 as to when to celebrate their birthdays in other years. This problem was settled in the reign of Henry III of England, who caused it to be written into the law that February 28 be the legal birthday in years when February 29 did not occur. s ranch <KigL icjh ts TO OUR READERS AND CONTRIBUTORS: Our official publication is published quarterly. The New Jersey Branches’ Scholarship Dinner-Dance in November was very successful and the committees are to be highly commended. We thank everyone who attended and we were most delighted by the presence of Director and Mrs. Frank Bero from Connecticut who represented the home office. The proceeds of $1,000.00 was given to the William Penn Scholarship Foundation. On December 2, 1979, Branch 13 held its annual meeting in conjunction with the Children’s Christmas Party. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the 50 year button by Director Frank J. Radvany to Frank Gabor. Mr. Gabor expressed his heartfelt thanks for inviting him to the Branch meeting to receive this citation. After the meeting, the election of Branch officers for the year 1980 proceeded. Once again the officers were unanimously re-elected to their respective office as follows: President, Frank J. Radvany; Vice-President, Joseph Hamari; Secretary, Elsie H. Radvany; Treasurer, Anthony C. Beke; and Controller, Betty Kennedy. Congratulations to each officer and many thanks to the membership for their trust and confidence in re-electing such fine people. 50 year member Frank Gabor congratulated by Director Frank J. Radvany. Our Children’s Christmas party was enjoyed by all with a delicious buffet. The children received stockings filled with goodies along with a Christmas carol pamphlet. The spirit of fraternalism instilled in each one of us the true meaning of this holy season. We are most grateful for the support from the home office for making this Christmas party and fellowship possible. Our regular monthly meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month commencing at 2:00 P.M. at the American Hungarian Democratic Citizen’s Club on So. Clinton Avenue, Trenton, N.J.
