VOLUME 12 SUMMER, 1977 34th Annual Bowling Tournament A Success For the first time in the history of our National Bowling Tournament it was held in a city where the Association does not have a Branch; Washington, D.C.. the Nation’s Capitol. Originally, it was planned to have the Tournament in that city in 197(1 in observance of the Bicentennial Anniversary of the U.S.A., which was the 90th anniversary of the Association. Space, however, was not available thus this year of 1977 was selected. Working without the assistance of a local branch and its officers the Tournament Co-Administrator, National Vice President John P. Balia and Vice President Membership Services Gus G. Nagy, did a very laudable job in making this 34th Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days a success. The plush Hyatt Regency Hotel was the Headquarters, everyone received excellent accommodations and by its very location, a few blocks from the Capitol Building, afforded many of those who were in attendance to do some sightseeing. The week-end of festivities began with the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., which was well attended. Directors were elected for the ensuing year. After the meeting the Hospitality Room was opened so that all participants be afforded the opportunity to renew friendships and spend an enjoyable evening of fellowship. Our thanks and congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Toth, Mr. and Mrs. John Toth, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Walick, Branch 89, Homestead, Pa., and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Nagy of Branch 71, Duquesne, Pa., who volunteered to man the Hospitality Room and who did such an excellent job under difficult circumstances. President Charles Rolls First Ball Saturday morning the Tournament itself started in the Fair Lanes, Springfield, Virginia which was not too distant from the Headquarters Hotel. Buses were provided by the Association, as usual, which made it convenient for the bowlers and their friends to attend the opening ceremonies and to watch the teams vie for honors. Brief opening ceremony consisted of welcoming by Vice President Gus G. Nagy and Mr. Elmer Charles, National President. Mr. Ronald Karnya, Tournament Secretary, then gave required instructions to the bowlers. Unfortunately, despite assurance by the management prior to the Tournament, scorekeepers were insufficient in number, which caused some inconvenience. Only 38 teams participated, which made this the Tournament with fewest participants. It it our hope that future Tournaments will (Continued on Page Two) NUMBER 3 Scholarship Foundation Acquires Youth Camp Site Mr. Elmer Charles, President of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., was exceedingly pleased to announce at the annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on May 27th, 1977 that the Scholarship Foundation had acquired a 158 acre site in Middlecreek Township, Somerset County, Pa. in the heart of the Laurel Highlands. Primarily through the efforts of Director William C. Kohut the Scholarship Foundation was selected by Directors of Ryan Homes, Inc. to be the recipient of this gift. There are several buildings located on the property and there is a spring fed lake of about 3 acres. The property is not far from the world famous resort of Seven Springs and is adjacent to Laurel Hill State Park. Every indication seenr»3 to be that this property can be developed into a fine Youth Camp and recreational area for both younger and older members of the William Penn Association. The acquisition of this property has realized a dream come true, a Youth Camp for our members. (Continued on Page Two) BON VOYAGE On Wednesday, August 17, 1977 the Second Annual Tour to Hungary will leave Greater Pittsburgh International Airport for Budapest, Hungary.
