Letting diarrhea run its course may be the best remedy of all. Travelers Cocktail Packing for that long awaited trip to Europe ? Save some space in your suit­case for a box of baking soda, a jar of honey, and some table salt. These, along with fruit juice and wa­ter, are the ingredients of a “traveler’s cocktail.” The traveler’s cocktail is a concoction invented by the Center for Disease Con­trol in Atlanta to control simple diar­rhea, a common affliction of Americans abroad. The cocktail consists of two glasses— one containing 8 ounces of fruit juice, Vi teaspoon of honey or corn syrup, and a pinch of salt; the other containing Vi teaspoon of baking soda and 8 ounces of boiled or carbonated water. These should be drunk alternately, followed by tea or a carbonated beverage for relief of diar­rheal symptoms. Traveler’s diarrhea affects almost half of American travelers. Although popu­larly blamed on water and spicy or ex­otic foods, the real cause remains a mystery. To help prevent traveler’s diarrhea, drink only pasteurized water. You can pasteurize water by collecting very hot tap water in a basin and allowing it to MINUTES . . .
