UMW MINERS FOR DEMOCRACY (Left to right) ARNOLD MILLER, MIKE TRBOVICH and HARRY PATRICK Our Association was founded 86 years ago by thirteen coal miners in the anthracite region of Hazelton, Pa. All through the years the Association has staunchly supported all those efforts which provided a better life for the coal miners. Many of our Branches were made up of coal-miners and even today there are areas where coal-miners are Branch officers and active members. Those of us who read the papers know that the Courts have ordered a new election of Officers for the United Mine Workers of America in December, 1972, Retirees Recognized The National Convention in September, 1971 requested the Board of Directors to look into the possibility of increasing the pension benefits for those employees who were contributors to the Association’s Pension Plan and who retired from service after January 1, 1957 and prior to January 1, 1969. The Board of Directors discussed this matter and then gave the assignment to our Actuary Mr. Robert E. Bruce for suggestions. Due to the fact that management in the past eight years has shown a steady growth and' profit increase, it was resolved by the Board of Directors to increase the monthly pension benefits of these deserving and valued retirees: Coloman Bertalan, Frank Cher, Margaret Evans, John Fulop, Anna Green, John Hegedűs, Peter Petruska, and Margaret Beres. This increase required a sizeable amount of Funding of the Pension Plan, which the Board unanimously approved and thus the increased benefits become effective October 1, 1972. This is just another fraternal gesture on the part of management to do what we can to assist our retirees. It is managements hope and prayer that these retirees will enjoy this increased benefit for many many more years. an election which will be monitored by the U. S. Department of Labor. Because our Association is founded on democratic principles and because there is a Miners For Democracy slated for election, we introduce to our members three top Candidates: Arnold R. Miller, Chairman, 7 State Black Lung Association, is candidate for President of U.M.W. Mike Trbovich, Clarksville, Pa. (Joseph “Jock” Jablonski’s home-town) is President of Local 6330 District 4 for Vice- President. Harry Patrick, a member of U.M.W. Local 4346 District 31 is candidate for Office of Secretary-Treasurer. They deserve the support of all members who want democratic rule in the U.M.W. Special Donation Given For Our Scholarship Foundation We bring excerpts of a letter which we believe exemplifies our belief that all members, who are financially able to do so, should contribute to this great fraternal activity. Dear Sir: In the April 1972 issue of “Penn Life” I saw your news item about the Scholarship Foundation. My grandparents were very active in the Cincinnati Branch of Verhovay until the early 50’s. Both died in the mid fifties. Grandfather was Secretary-Treasurer of Br. 114 for many years. In memory of Joseph and Mary Valent I am donating the enclosed $50.00, wish it could be more. I was helped by several scholarships and got through college only because of them, so I know how important they are. Sincerely, Dorothy Valent (Editor's Note: Mr. Joseph Valent organized Branch 114, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1908 and was its Manager for over 40 ■years.)
