to see more familiar faces and to have such an interesting meeting. Already we are planning ahead for our FALL Banquet. There is really no excuse for anyone NOT knowing about our Fall Banquet. We are giving you plenty of advance notice—the date is September 19, 1970, so mark your canlendar NOW — September 19th, reserved for Branch 76’s Annual Banquet. It was sad to learn at our meeting of the deaths of two of our life long members. One was Mrs. Margaret Toth, the mother of Mr. Michael Toth, an officer of our branch. The other was Mr. Joseph Starr of Manayunk, Pa. We wish to convey to the family and their friends our deepest sympathies. Many of you have asked to be remembered on their special occasion days, or have special news, events, etc., which I will do gladly if so notified. The Home Office was saddened to learn that on Christmas Eve, Mr. Steve Shavensky, who for many years managed Branch 172 died suddenly. Mr. Elmer Charles, National President and Mr. Gus G. Nagy, Supervisor of Agencies paid last respects in the name of the Association. The condolences of the Association are extended to the surviving family. As a result of Mr. Shavensky’s passing, the Home Office will dissolve Branch 172 and the members are being transferred to Branch 296, Springdale, Pa. Members may contact Mr. George Charles, Branch Manager, or the Home Office for any matters pertaining to their William Penn insurance. 189 Alliance, Ohio A gala Christmas party was held by Branch 189, Alliance, Ohio for children of members and social members of William Penn. Singing of Christmas Carols, under the direction of Mrs. Marie Zurbrugg and Barbara Korosy. Games were played with prizes given to all who participated in the games. Santa Claus was portrayed by Mike Korosy. In his sack he carried gifts of stockings filled with goodies for 90 children. Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served to all. On the evening of December 20, a delicious steak dinner was served to the officers and board members by Mary Gulling, club manager of William Penn Club. James Sera, a comptroller of Branch 189, was unable to attend as he is recuperating from surgery. Election of board officers was held January 18 at the William Penn Club. President Mike Duruttya opened the meeting by having all present give a silent prayer for deceased members. He then gave thanks to the officers for their fine cooperation during the past year. Vice President Barany retaliated by complimenting Mr. Duruttya for his everuntiring efforts. Those elected for 1970 were: President: Mike Duruttya; Vice President: John Barany; Secretary: Mike Korosy; Treasurer: Mike Buzogány; Comptrollers: John Frances and Robert Hahlen; Reporter: Marie Duruttya. At the close of the meeting, refreshments were served. First meeting of the board was held on January 21, at 8:00 P.M. Officers were sworn in by President Mike Duruttya, who is also Branch Manager of 189. Main topic was the remodeling plans that are now in operation of the banquet room. Mrs. Joe Gulling is club manager. She urges insurance members to have their club cards with them, if you haven’t received one she asks you leave your name, and Branch Manager Duruttya will mail you one. The William Penn Auxiliary held their Christmas party with 15 women present. Gifts were exchanged and Christmas Carols were sung in Hungarian. We hold our meetings the first Mondays of each month. Refreshments will be served, at the next meeting, smorgasbord style, with Mrs. Susie Bolog, Mrs. Ignatz Bara, Mrs. Dusty Rhodes, Mrs. Elsie Baranyai, Mrs. John Dugan, Mrs. Mike Duruttya, and Mrs. Susie Mathe as hostesses. We are sorry to hear that our honorary board member, Mr. James Sera is ill at the Alliance City hospital. We all wish him a speedy recovery. Seibert, President of Br. 226 opened the Christmas Party by greeting the children and parents, followed by singing of carols, watching movies and enjoying the dance group dressed in Hungarian costume, under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Buck. Santa Claus arrived later spreading cheer and distributed presents. The party was well attended. The Branch President and Officers wish to thank all of those who helped make the party a happy one. Election of officers was held prior to the party. All officers were re-elected: President: Mr. Louis Seibert; Vice President: Mr. John Yusko; Secretary: Mr. Edward M. Officers were installed by Mr. Elmer Charles, National President. Meeting of Branch 296 will be held the Fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 P.M. in Social Hall of United Church of Christ, 130 Walter Lane, Springdale, Pa. Anyone having new member prsopects should contact Mr. George Charles, Branch Manager or Mr. Gus G .Nagy, Agency Supervisor. The Branch had a most successful Christmas Party which was attended by 100 children of the Branch. A fine program was arranged, Rev. Imre Kovács, Pastor, United Church of Christ spoke beautifully to the children on the meaning of Christmas. Carol singing, movies, pop, goodies and gifts were also enjoyed. We wish to thank all the Branch Officers and parents who assisted in making it a successful Christmas Party. 348 Morgantown, W. Va. John Vargo, age 89, of Morgantown, West Virginia, died Tuesday, January 13, 1970. He was born November 19, 1880, in Austria-Hungary, a son of Andrew C. and Judith Vargo. He was a retired coal miner, a former member of the United Mine Workers of America, and a member of William Penn Fraternal Association, Branch 348 for 37 years. Survivors are six godchildren: Gabriel Szarka of Morgantown, W. Va.; Rudolph Nagy of Dearborn, Michigan; Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson of Riverview, Michigan; John Pestun of Charles Town, W. Va.; and Joseph and Daniel Pestun of Morgantown, W. Va. Services were held at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home in the Chapel of Prayer Friday, January 16, with the Rev. Richard Rife officiating. Burial followed in East Oak Grove Cemetery. 9 I
