Letters to the Editors Dear President Charles: I am writing to you as Editor-In-Chief of our Penn Life Publication, knowing that the Coal Miners and their future welfare is close to your heart. I am an active member of the U.M.W. of America, President of my Local, No. 4426, Harmarville, Pennsylvania. My Local and many other locals are unanimously supporting Joseph “Jock” Yablonski for the Presidency of the U.M.W. of America. He entered the mine as a young man, joined the Union and took great pride in it. He won the nomination despite the violation of our Constitution, threats, physical violence, because he has the support of loyal, devoted volunteers of thousands of active and retired miners. I would appreciate publicity in our Penn Life Publication for the benefit of the miners who are members of our organization, urging them to vote for Joseph “Jock” Yablonski, who respects the rank and file and will provide progressive and dynamic leadership. Sincerely and Fraternally yours, Louis A. Antal Former Branch President #296 Editor's Note: Knowing Mr. Antal’s dedication to his fellow miners and his convictions as a labor leader, we have printed the text of his letter for the interest and benefit of our miner members and ask them to vote for Joseph “Jock” Yablonski. In addition to his widow and daughter Mr. Szalanczy is mourned by his son-in-law .Bert Erdélyi_j_T. and granddaughter Marilyn "Erdélyi. ’ John Szalanczy earned his living as a painting contractor and had built himself a lucrative business and when in 1941 former National Treasurer Michael Varga died, Mr. Szalanczy was appointed by the Board of Directors to fill the vacancy and was successively re-elected unanimously to that position by the National Conventions. He diligently and faithfully served as the National Treasurer of the Association until his retirement December 31, 1955. He was one of the four officers who by voluntarily retiring made it possible for the Verhovay and Rákóczi Associations to merge and become the William Penn Fraternal Association. Mr. Szalanczy began his career in the Verhovay Aid Association as President for 4 years of Branch 96 Chicago. He, with his daughter, Flora, organized the first Juvenile Branch in the Chicago area. In 1935 he represented his District at the National Convention and at that time his leadership qualities were recognized and he was elected an Alternate Director. After retiring as National Treasurer Mr. and Mrs. Szalanczy moved back home to Homewood, 111. from Pittsburgh. He enjoyed his yard and garden and was particularly proud of his flowers. Management is fully aware of this and together with the programmers at the Computer Center, have been working on a method to solve this problem. To date, there has been no solution to the problem because our Master Record File is maintained in certificate number sequence. Thus, under the present program the Computer is unable to select those notices going to the same address. Our programmers, however, are working on this problem and as soon as a solution is found this situation will be rectified. Management realizes that there are many members of the William Penn Fraternal Association who have more than one certificate. Generally, the semiannual or annual payment for these certificates come due in the same month. It is suggested that those members with more than one certificate who pay semiannually or annually in advance, could stagger the due date of their certificates so that the payments would become due at different months during the year, thus the family budget could be better set up. tngarian New Edition of Popular Cook Book i<JreasitreJ <J~(nr cyp . ” rCecipes Published by the Wm.
