A Három-szoi os-vízerömü 405 bad economic efficiency could also be improved via the market influence of the cheaper hydropower, — Last but not least this enormous investment will provide an impetus to the long term development of the economy. Establishments of the Three-Pass Project are as follows: the dam, the hydropower station and the facilities of navigation. The design of the scheme is the following: the spillway openings are in the middle, discharging into the middle of the river channel; there arc power stations (turbines) at both sides of the dam and in between are the regulating gates. The length of the crest of the concrcte dam is 2309.4 m. The height of the dam crest is 1 85 m, while the operation water level is at 145 m. At extraordinary flood conditions the water level may reach 1 80.4 m. In the left side of the dam there are two five-step navigation lock systems and a single-step vessel-lift. In the block of the power station there are 14 Francis type turbines. The spillway is in the middle and 12 Francis turbines will be installed in the right side power station block (Figure 3.). Twenty-six generators of 700, 000 kW capacity each will be installed, with a total capacity of 1.8 million kW. The annual output will be 84.7 billion kWh (this is one-seventh of the electric energy production of China, in 1 992) and will considerably relieve the energy demand of East and Middle China and of East Sichuan. The technical data of the turbines and generators to be installed are summarized in Table I. The spillway structure is 483 m long and includes 23 bottom outlets with 7 m wide and 9 m high openings (Figure 4.). The surface area of the reservoir is 1084 km 2 with a total storage capacity of 39.3 km 3. The flood storage capacity is 22.15 km 3. The back waters will influence the water level of the Yangtze over about 660 km. The water level at Chongqing will rise by 15 m. The area to be inundated includes 824 km roads and 34 km 2 settlements. This necessitates the relocation of 1,113 million people, considered already in the planning phase. The distribution of the population to be trans-located is shown, according to the towns involved, in Table III. Navigation facilities are all located on the left side of the dam. The final navigation structure will be a dual five-stage lock system. The effective dimensions of the lock chambers are 280 mx34 mx5 m (length, width depth) and they arc able to serve ships of 10,000 ton capacity. The vessel-lift will be able to lift ships of 120 mxl8 mx2.5 m hull size and of 3,000 ton capacity. For the period of construction a temporary navigation lock of 240 mx24 mx4 m dimension will be installed. The comparison of the data of the vessel-lift to those of other similar facilities is shown in Table II. The Three-Pass Project is probably the largest construction work of the world so far. The planning started in 1993 after 50 years of preparatory activities. The commissioning of this gigantic power station is cxpected by 2009.
