Vízügyi Közlemények 1991. 1. füzet * * * The XVIIth Conference of Danube Countries on hydrology by Gábor BÁLINT hydrologist The XVIIth Conference of Danube Countries on Hydrological Forecasting and Hydrological Bases of Water Management was hold in Budapest, Hungary, September 4-9, 1994. The series of conferences have a long tradition and the 17th Conference opened the third round of regional meetings since 1961, as it can be followed by Table 1. This time 198 registered participants attended the Conference which was organized under the auspices of International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO and the Hydrology and Water Resources Programme of the World Meteorological Organization at the premises of the Water Resources Research Centre (VITUKI). There are 15 countries having large share in the territory of the Danube Basin, all of them were represented at the Conference and participants were also received from five other countries of Europe and USA (Table 2.). Almost one hundred papers were presented in five thematic groups during plenary sessions. Most of the lectures used English the other conference language was German and simultaneous interpretation was provided throughout the sessions. The prepublished (in two volumes) Conference Proceedings contain 94 original papers in English and 22 in German screened by the international board of conveners. The first session (16 papers) covered topics of hydrological data collection, hydrometry and regionalization. The state of observation networks in certain countries was reviewed. The second thematic group dealt with short and long-range hydrological forecasts. Unfortunately the 20 papers brought little new to this traditional conference topic. The applicability of some old and new flood routing techniques were demonstrated, some innovations made. Discussion has shown that only substantial technological development in the field of meteorological and hydrological observations together with extended use of advanced computer facilities can bring a breakthrough in operational hydrology. Theme 3 „Methodological and empirical experiences gained with the compilation of water balances, related aspects of climate change and fluctuations and of anthropogenic impacts" was presented by 34 papers. Much attention was paid to studies related to the hydrological consequences of climate variability, results presented may deserve interest outside of the Danube region. Most of 14 papers in Theme 4 „New solutions of sediment transport problems; analysis of head and ice regime" dealt with problems of bed load and suspended sediment assessment. Addressing water quality and the state of water bodies and also environmental protection and utilization of biotopes of the Danube system was relatively new in the history of conferences, however the 31 papers contributed to the application of systems approach to managing the aquatic environment. The XVIDth Conference of Danube Countries will be hold in Graz, Austria August 26-30, 1996.
