BODY, Meteorologist The National Hydrological Forecasting Service (NHFS) - a section of the Research Centre for Water Resources Development - is the central unit for operative hydrological data collection nd for water forecasting in Hungary. Its task is to gather daily hydrometeorological observations measured in domestic and foreign catchments (Table I), to publish this information, and to prepare forecasts (Fig. 1). NHFS is the source of daily water stage reports broadcasted by the Hungarian Radio in foreign and Hungarian languages. It reports the data of 109 domestic and 99 foreign water gauging stations and issues the "Daily Water Regime Map" since 91 years. Automated access to data an-i forecasts was made possible by use of the HYDROINFORM microcomputerized information system that can be dialed day and night by telex. NHFS is also engaged in methodological investigations for the improvement of hydrological forecasts, in the daily operative forecasting of the water regimes of rivers, and in different types of flood-forecasts. The forecasting system over the Danube operated since 2 years (Fig. 2) will be soon supplemented by a similar system in the Tisza-Valley, under experimental conditions, first (Fig. 3). The objectives for development of the NHFS are the following: data acquisition, processing and the preparation of forecasts by a completely automated, on-line computer system.
