To establish the balance between the available supplies and the consumer demands, a set of administrative-, legal-, economicand engineering measures must be implemented. These include the reuse of wastewaters after the necessary treatment. In Hungary the primary domains of such reuse are agriculture and industrial water supply. Advanced treatment in the interest of wastewater reuse is commonly referred to as tertiary treatment. The first unit operation thereof consists usually of filtration. In view of the potential expansion of effluent reuse and recycling this appears to present the relatively simplest and least expensive solution. Following a review of the concepts and methods of measurement associated with filtration, a detailed description is given of the precoat filter operating at the Pécs Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant. The secondary effluent treated to a high degree of removal efficiency is passed through a settling tank, prechlorinated and conveyed subsequently to the filter. Initially diatomaceous earth, presently perlite of P — 2 quality is used as filter coating. The filter effluent is chlorinated and fed into the industrial distribution network situated on the southern side of the town. Pumping against an elevated service basin the pumps deliver the treated effluent to meet the inferior-quality water of several industrial plants at Pécs. The suspended concentration in the secondary effluent is less than 20 mg/lit and is reduced to below 4 mg/lit by filtration using perlite at the rate of 0.5 kg per cu.m of filtrate without recovery. The trial operation of one year duration was carefully supervised by the competent public health officials. From the parasitological viewpoint the quality was found to be perfect. Model tests have demonstrated that wireworm eggs are removed dependably by filtration. The system has operated reliably since January 1, 1979. The unit price of construction and operation is lower than the corresponding figures for industrial water obtained from surface supplies.
