Majorlaki Four countries share the catchment area of the round 700 km long Dráva River originating on the south-eastern slopes of the Alps. An insignificant part of the headwater catchment is situated on Italian territory, while the river itself flows over 250 km on Austrian, over 265 km onYugoslavian territory, the 170 km long downstream section forming the border between Yugoslavia and Hungary. The river drains a catchment of round 40 thousand kin 2 area. Owing to the favourable conditions prevailing in Ihe catchment the water regime is rather balanced with discharges ranging from 200 to 3,100 m 3/sec, a fluctuation of water levels attaining hardly 5 m, and besides the abundant runoff the short duration of floods with long mean flow periods are the most salient features. Since as regards runoff the Dráva River is the second largest stream after Lhe Danube in Hungary it was found expedient to consider under a joint HungarianYugoslavian program the existing water management and environment situation further the development problems related to the stream. At the International Dráva Conference held in 1974 with 60 participants from Hungary and 40 from abroad the problems were expounded in 27 papers, grouped according to 4 subjects: — water management and flood control in the Dráva catchment — complex development of the Dráva River, — the quality of water in the Dráva River, — the development and conservation of the environment along the Dráva River. Under the first subject special attention has been devoted to regulation works and the joint performance thereof, further to flood control. The second subject has considered the opportunities and problems in water supply, hydroelectric development and navigation. In the third subject a detailed pictule has been presented on the quality of water in the Dráva River and her tributaries, on the extent of self-purification, emphasizing the need for concerted pollution control measures in all states affected in the region in order to attain a higher degree of pollution control. Under the fourth subject the factors detrimental to the environment, including the waters, the atmosphere and soils of the region, have been listed, emphasizing the need for reducing and preventing further damages. * * * Wasserwirtschaft und Umweltschutz im Drautal, Entwicklungsaufgaben vor der Internationalen Drautagnng Von Dr. Ing.
