A Déldunántúli Vízügyi Igazgatóság 283 canals and 611 kilometres of regional and farm main distribution network state control. The works carried out in the diverse branches of regional water management during the fourth five-year plan period from 1971 to 1975 are described in sections a to f ( Fig. 1.). Section a ) deals with the development of flood control, as a result of which the situation has been changed radically, in that the control system relying mainly on the flood levees has been replaced by a regional control system. In Section b) the evolution of reclamation-drainage works according to new working principles is described, separately for three drainage sub-catchments (see Fig. 1.). In Section c) a description is presented of the water development activities, quoting the example of two major irrigation projects. Section d) is devoted to the problems in regional water management, with Fig. 2. demonstrating the Hajdúhátság Multi-Purpose Water Resources Scheme. In connection therewith the complex development programme of the area is described. Section e) presents a picture of the activities in environment conservation and improvement related to water management, while in Section e ) the deficiencies in water supply and sewerage, as well as the plans and realization of the gradual development programme are discussed. In Chapter 2 the major tasks of the next five-year plan period are outlined, which are connected organically to those of the fourth five-year plan period. (The salient features of water management in the region have already been described in a paper published in No. 4, Vol. 1974 of the present journal.)
