(497) drought in the last 50 years — could have been ensured so, that in the period from 10. July to 10. August some 66 per cent and after the latter date 50 per cent of the maximum water demand world have been covered. In the course of computation the demand of fish ponds as well as that of various other plants has not been taken into consideration. The results of the investigations are shown in Table XVIII. It is to be seen that in order to promote the assumed development, additional water supply by pondage or by constructing plain-land reservoirs must be provided for. The existing irrigation works and facilities necessitated considerable investment and in the years 1947 — 1957 i.e., in eleven years the sum 1 503,4 million forints had been invested. The question arises as to what economic advantages have been achieved bg these investments for the benefit of national economy and when will the invested sums be refunded. The results of the computations are the following: 1. Items on the credit side of irrigation in the years 1947 — 1957 : Increment income of rice growing, horticulture, ploughland, grass-land, pasture due to irrigation and that of fishponds 2 975,3 million Ft Collected water rates 25 9, 2 million Ft Total 3 234,5 million Ft 2. Items on the debit side of irrigation in the years 1947 — 1957 : Amortization . 297,5 million Ft Maintenance, operation costs and increment cost of dredging drainage channels also used for irrigation 810,8 million Ft Damages and expropriation 42,0 million Ft Land occupied by main irrigation structures, loss in crop in water-logged areas 110,0 million Ft Costs of irrigation organization ^^^ 440,0 million Ft Total 1 700,3 million Ft Result of irrigation during the period mentioned above represented by the difference between heading 1. and 2 1 534,2 million Ft The above cipher shows that the total sum of 1 503,4 million forints invested hitherto has been refunded despite the fact that the possibilities afforded by the structures have not been exploited to their full extent. (Authors' summary translated by Ii. Konkoly techn. translator.)
