EDITORIAL 626/628 (05) : 061.091.5 (439.1) The Hydraulic Engineering, official paper of the Hydraulic Services in Hungary, is celebrating this year its 75-th anniversary, of importance for two reasons from the Hungarian point of view. First because there are few specialized engineering reviews looking back to such long past, secondly because about x/i of Hungary's territory is reclamed floodland, and hydraulic work has played a very important part in the country's economic upheaval. For the second reason constant interest has been shown abroad for hydraulic work in Hungary. In foreign engineering literature there are many references e. g. to flood protection work in Hungary, or to efforts of Hungarian engineers to improve the international waterway of the Danube. However, there are hardly 15 million Hungarian speaking people in the World. Description in Hungarian language of our engineering achievements and research results do not give adequate information to foreign experts in hydraulic engineering. To make known abroad the work and aims of Hungarian hydraulic engineers and to organize international exchange of experience has induced the Editorship of the Hydraulic Engineering to complement their review with summaries in foreign languages from 1932 onward. International connections thus developed were interrupted by World War II., but afterwards the international exchange of publications restarted and has already for 10 years served the peaceful collaboration of hydraulic engineers of the World. This collaboration has proved mutually fruitful. Foreign reviews carefully register the more important articles of our paper, and the Hydraulic Engineering systematically reviews foreign publications received, partly in its own columns, partly on reference sheets of the Centre of Documentation of the Hungarian Hydraulic Services. To build up foreign relations requires hard and tough work. Difficulties of translation of summaries are well known to those engaged in the translation of engineering literature. The foreign edition of our paper requires beyond financial expediture much brainwork. Therefore we are taking great care of the control and of the extension of the address list of our foreign readers. On the occasion of our jubilee we are asking for further interest of our foreign readers, for their contribution — by criticism and advice — to the improvement of our paper and to the further extension of our connections. Upon order of the National Waterboard the Hydraulic Engineering is being published by the Research Institute for Water Resources. The Editorship is acting within the body of the Institute and is authorized to entertain foreign relations and particularlv to implement the exchange of publications. (Address : Vízügyi Közlemények. Du point de vue hongrois ce jubilé est remarquable pour deux raisons : d'une part par ce qu'il existe peu de périodiques techniques spécialisés qui remontent à un passé aussi lointain, d'autre part par ce (pie les travaux hydrauliques ont toujours joué un rôle considérable dans l'essor économique de la Hongrie, le quart du territoire de ce pays ayant été conquis sur le règne de l'eau. Ce dernier fait a suscité et tenu en éveil l'intérêt de l'étranger pour les travaux hydrauliques de la Hongrie. Aussi trouvons-nous dans la littérature technique de l'étranger maintes références aux travaux de protection contre les inondations en Hongrie ou aux efforts déployés par les ingénieurs hongrois en vue d'améliorer la voie d'eau internationale qu'est le Danube. Cependant le nombre de ceux qui parlent le hongrois n'atteint par le monde à peine le chiffre de 15 millions. Les descriptions de nos réalisations techniques et les communications des résultats de nos recherches paraissant en langue hongroise ne peuvent donc guère assurer d'une manière satisfaisante l'information des milieux techniques étrangers.
