TRAFFIC ON THE BALATON LAKE TN 1935. By B. PATAKY. (Pages 260—263.) The Balaton Lake, which has an area of (>10 sq. km, is the most important pleasure and tourist resort in Hungary. Owing to its shallow depth (3 m on an average), its water warms up well ; it has wide sandy beaches along its southern shore, and its northern side is bordered by picturesque mountains ; all this attracts large crowds of tourists. Its passenger traffic culminates in July and August (fig. 3, ordinates in thousand persons). The goods traffic is greatest before and after the bathing season, and consists chiefly of shipments of stone (fig. 1, ordinates in thousand tons, the white parts of the columns indicate transport of stone). Figure 2 shows the direction of the traffic ; the products of the quarries on the northern shore are carried to the southern shore as building and paving material. (Inscriptions of figure 2 in succession : persons arriving and departing ; registered and discharged goods.) The table on page 2(il gives the arriving and starting traffic for each harbour separately, specifying in both columns the passengers, stone, wheat and other goods. X.
