PAGE 16 Verhovay Journal MOTOR CITY NEWS BRANCH 36 DETROIT, MICHIGAN By Jolán Lucas It was a lovely summer, with gardening, boating, fishing and relaxing in the coolness of the recreation room but it’s time now to get to work. The best piece of news at this time is that, at long last, Branch 36 will have its first Children’s Christmas Party. The only information to pass on at present is that it will be held Sunday afternoon, December 18, 1955, at the former Verhovay home, 8005 Jefferson Avenue. A Christmas program is being planned for your entertainment, with gifts, Christmas tree, and, as Mr. Stephen Lukacs, Traveling District Manager, has promised, a real Santa Claus, all the way from Bethlehem. Be sure to read the Hungarian issue for further details. Remember, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, at 8005 W. Jefferson Avenue. * * * Annual elections and year-end meeting will be held Sunday at 2 p. m. on December 4th, at 8005 W. Jefferson Avenue, so plan to attend in a large majority. * * PERSONAL NEWS OF MEMBERS: Mr. Simon Kosty’s daughter, Mrs. Alice Heil, presented Grandpa Kosty with twins, a son and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Antal (Rose) Miastkowski have moved to Garden City from their former home on Lyon Street. We all hope you are happy in your new home. Traveling District Manager and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Lukacs welcome home their son-in-law, George Bosman, after four years in the Navy. Welcome home, lad! Mr. Julius Fazekas and family have moved from Mendota Avenue to their new home on Cherry Hill Road in Dearborn. To Mr. Fazekas, his wife, the former Margaret Lengyel, and their two daughters, we wish the best of happiness, and good luck to Mr. Fazekas in his new’ enterprise. * ¥ » Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Murin on the birth of their son on September 30. * 5): * If any of you members would like to send me news of your various activities, please write or call at the number below. Between you and me, it would be fun to meet some of these members in person. Why not plan a dance soon? * * * I should like to take this opportunity to say “Howdy” to our new’ fraternal brethren from the Rakoczy Aid Association. It would be a fine gesture to plan a big social after the first of the year to celebrate our new' name, WILLIAM PENN FRATERNAL ASSOCIATION, and also to meet our newest fellow members. I’d suggest renting a large new hall somwhere besides the Delray District, and really do the affair thoroughly. Then the sooner the Building Committee can arrange the purchase of a new' William Penn Fraternal Association home, the earlier w’e can make the Motor City sing the praises of the enlarged fraternal group. With close to six thousand adult members and hundreds of juveniles, we should have some real fun! * # * Until the next issue . .. and more news . . . and more practise in writing, I leave you to plan for the big CHRISTMAS PARTY on DECEMBER 18th. Your old Ferret 12996 Rosedale Avenue Wyandotte, Michigan AVenue 5-0106. The Battle of Buckeye Road. The skirmish will take place in the city council between two Verhovay members for the council presidency next January 1956. Open warfare has been declared by Mary K. Sotak, 29th ward councilwoman, against Jack P. Russell, councilman of the 16th ward. This should be interesting. We recommed to Director Louis Vassy,. Dayton, Ohio, that he contact these state representatives from Montgomery County to sign them into Verhovay: Honorable Robert L. Roderer, 224 Wortman, Honorable Charles W. Whalen, 228 Beverly Place, Honorable Robert J. Withrow, Jr., 112 Constance Avenue — all of Dayton, Ohio. Similar recommendations go also to District Manager Stephen J. Ivancso of Toledo, Ohio, who might try to enroll the following: Honorable Francis F. Reno, 705 Buckeye Street, Honorable Andrew Devine, 520 Islington Street, Honorable John J. Connors, Jr., 2934 Goddard Road — all of Toledo, Ohio. We regret to inform our readers that John Matyas, barber, dancing instructor, restaurantéul- and former Verhovay home manager, passed away October 8. 1955. Our prayers for the repose of his soul, and our condolence to this family. The younger generation reallyshowed its “muscle” at the latest Verhovay Convention. This is only the beginning. Watch for 1959 for more reforms and progress. Delegate Joseph Hegedűs informed us that delegates Ed Torda and Joseph Semetko did good work on behalf of the bowling tournament. We do not contemplate any change in our column n me for we like the name VERHOVAY WATCHTOWER. Louis Varga, manager of Settlers, has sold his interest and now is a man of leisure. For how long? The grape festival at the Verhovay hall on October 9th broúght together many Verhovay dignitaries. We hear that Dr. Andrew Kovács, I the only Director of the Cleveland area, is a fine diplomat. At the Verhovay-Rakoczi banquet he brought peace to the squabbling factions of the West Side. He caused the peace pipe to be smoked. Unity and progress shall come to the West Side as a result of this peace-making move. CONGRATULATIONS to MAYOR ANTHONY CELEBREZZE on his reelection as Mayor of Cleveland. We attended a card party at the Hungarian Lutheran Church on Sunday, October 23d. The party was given by the Altar Society. The profits are to he applied to the school debt. We enjoyed ourselves and talked with the pastor, the Rev. Andor Leffler who, we thought, looked exceptionally well after his l-ecent illness. St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church celebrated its silver jubilee Sunday, October 30th, with a parade, Mass and on old-fashioned Hungarian dinner in the church hall on East 116 and Harvey. We have a dear friend, Dennis Szász, who is secretary of the West Side Rákóczi branch. Coloman Fuzzi, new manager of the Verhovay home, has joined the Verhovay Sports Club as an honorary member. WELCOME. We heard at the meeting that Joseph Semetko or Anthony Pinter may run for president of Branch 14... Oscar Federau is on an enforced vacation . . . Frances Beres gave up her job at a manufacturing plant... Jake Torda and Terry Gutka will be married on November 19th... '‘Burma Shorts” Piscalko is bowling in one league instead of three ... Frank Oravis, entertainment committee chairman, will have the bird with the gobbling sound for the Chistmas party... Ann Pinter will cook it... Sandy and Mel Hegedűs may go to Florida this winter ... Steve Vache goes back to Crile Hospital every Sunday . .. Helen Oravis is beginning to speak up at the meetings ... Dorothy Kastan doesn’t like to he corrected on the minute book... Pali bácsi, Verhovay jackof-all trades, is in the hospital — bad toe .. . Mary and Joseph Bodnar are living with their daughter on Griffin Avenue — the Turaks . .. Joseph Barry, West Side member, paid a visit to the East Side Verbovay ... There will he a New Year’s eve party at the home, under the leadership of the manager, Coloman Fuzzi. . . Ted Beres conducts meetings masterfully — he is vice president. If Steve Sutch, Jr. of Painesville, Ohio — back to more members for dear old Verhovay — were to ask the Honorable C. Lee Mantle. Legist lator of Lake County, who lives at 188 Mantle Road, Painesville, the branch manager might induce him to join our Association. We are going to start our campaign- for reelection as state representative December 1st. The primary election is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May. Keep us in mind, please. Frank J. Lausche, Governor of Ohio and a Branch 14 member, can win the Presidency of the United States if he decides to go after it. Ex animo, JOSEPH J. HORVATH c. o. Verhovay Home, 8637 Buckeye Road, Cleveland 4, Ohio. CALL CIVIL DEFENSE November 16, 1955. The Past Recalled No doubt, as grandfather Stephen Csabi proudly and lovingly holds his granddaughter Dolores Marie, he thinks of yore when in same manner he fondled his own child, the father of tiny Dolores Marie. Mr. Csabi is president of Branch 443, Detroit, Michigan. Dolores Marie is now a member of Verhovay, having been enrolled at Branch 36, Detroit, by Traveling District Manager Stephen Lukacs, who wisely recommended the Endowment at Age 18 Certificate for the infant. Dolores Marie will have an excellent financial start when she reaches age 18, thanks to her "selfless parents and to insurance expert Mr. Lukacs, one of the members of our well-qualified field force. Your Health From the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania and the Allegheny County Medical Society Bronchiectasis is not necessarily increasing although discovery an.l recording of cases has increased. This is a disease of the bronchi, the two main branches of the trachea extending into the lungs. Bronchiectasis is defined as a chronic dilatation of the bronchi in which their structural walls become inflammed and damaged dependingon the development of the disease process. The condition is marked by bad breath and paroxysmal coughingand the expectoration of mucus and pus. Most patients give a history of previous pneumonia, lung abcess, pulmonary tumor, or tuberculosis. While the majority of cases are acauired, it is believed that hereditary factors may also be involved. A chronic cough with sputum, a foul breath and constant bad taste in the mouth, chest pains, and sometimes blood in the sputum aresigns and symptoms of bronchiectasis. Many eases had frequent attacks of chronic bronchitis while others I have had virtually no symptoms. Surgery is the prescribed treatí ment for this progressive and usually irreversible disease although medical ! management, never a cure, may accomplish much.
