September ia. 1953.__________________________Verhovay Journal PAGE 5 POWER CITY NEWS SPRINGDALE, PA. AND VICINITY by Edward A. Mattie Branch 296 During the past ten years, Branch 296 has been continuously growing and expanding. Each year it has been the sincere desire of the branch officers to give to its members the best service and social activities that they so rightly deserve. With this purpose in mind, the past several years has seen a rapid growth in its membership., The time has finally arrived whereby Branch 296 must expand its facilities. Those of you who have been attending the branch meetings know that we have been negotiating for a NEW Verhovay Home. I can now report that the former Odd Fellows building on Walters Lane has been secured as the site of our new home. With this building, Branch 296 will be able to expand its social activities by having a modern social quarters, dance and meeting hall, and a banquet hall. The building will be ready for occupancy on or about January 1st. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE BOWLING The bowling season is now getting under way. Like last year, the Verhovay Branch 296 Mixed Tenpin League is open to both men and women members. The bowling will take place at the Trocarino Bowling Alley in New Kensington (Parnassus), on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 P.M. The time is especially suitable for husbands and wives, or families, to bowl together. Any member who desires to bowl should get in touch with Mrs. Walter Wesoloski or Edward Mattie. A one dollar entry will be charged. COMING EVENTS Each Saturday evening a modern orchestra will play at the Verhovay Home for your dancing and listening pleasure. Every fourth Saturday, starting September 26, Arthur Nagy and his Hungarian Orchestra will be engaged. Every member and his guest is cordially invited to attend these affairs. To commemorate this great step, the officers and trustees have decided to conduct a campaign for new members. We are asking each member to secure ONE NEW MEMBER for the branch. There is no limit to the number of persons a member can recommend, but each member should recommend at least one. This can very easily be done by talking to a neighbor, a friend, relative, or a fellow worker. In the very near future each member will receive by mail information and details for the membership campaign. So start now ! BACON ROAST The bacon and lamb roast held on August 16 at Springdale Park was a great success. It was intended only as a small quiet social gathering. But the turnout was very gratifying. Many thanks to the officers and to the members for this affair. Ilona Fulop, who won wide acclaim as one of the foremost journalists and writers read in The United States and in Canada, died suddenly August 4, 1953. The noted Hungarian author was a motion picture scenarist in Hollywood at the time of her death. Ilona Fulop came to this country in 1914 from Szabadka, Hungary. She immediately embarked on a successful newspaper career, and thru the years associated her efforts with various Hungarian publications. She rose to the position of editor and authored several literary pieces that will permanently retain their popularity in Hungarian American literature. Ilona Fulop was a favorite with the readers of the Verhovayak Lapja, our Hungarian language publication. Her stories appeared often in that issue and were well received because of their warm direct style. We recall too that she opened the first Verhovay office in New York City during the time she was our organizer there. Ilona Fulop is now a conspicuous part of the history of Hungarians in America. Branch 48 of N. Y. €. Bowling League Holds Annual Election of Officers On Friday night, August 21st, the bowlers of Branch 48 held their annual meeting, at which time they elected officers for 1953-54 and discussed plans for the coming season. The officers elected were as follows: Charles Fabian, President of League; Matt Weiser, Vice President; Alexander Ancsanyi, Secretary- Treasurer. It was proposed and passed upon that the regular bowling season for the 6 teams of Branch 48 shall start on Tuesday night, September 8th, and shall consist of 36 weeks of bowling. It was also agreed that this league shall send a team, or perhaps two, to the next National Bowling Tournament, wherever it shall be held. The season’s bowling will be held at Fok Bowling Academy, 3010-31 St., Astoria, Long Island. Since Mr. Alexander Ancsanyi has been doing a grand job in keeping the books and records of this league, this is the third time he has been elected to the post of secretarytreasurer. There is mutual understanding among the bowlers of this league that no president or vice president shall serve more than a term of two consecutive years. For this reason, John Partmann, former president, and Ernest Nemeth, former vice president, declined the nominations, resulting in the elections mentioned above.
