PAGE 2 Verhovay Journal August 19, 1953 East Chicago Member Rates Editorial Page John William Tenkelv The June 9, 1953 issue of THE HAMMOND TIMES, daiiy newspaper of Hammond, Indiana, devoted one of its articles on the editorial page to John William Tenkely of East Chicago, Indiana. 70 year old naturalized American bom in Hungary. Mr. Tenkely, a member of Branch 130, East Chicago, has led a life of remarkable accomplishments almost since the time he came to America in 1904. The one-time Hungarian soldier and machinist lost his mother when he was only three, his father when a mere thirteen. This forced upon him an earlier than usual struggle in the world, no doubt of commanding importance in molding him for a prominent and victorious personal future. Mr. Tenkely worked at a steel imill, in railroad yards, operated a (grocery for nine years, last November sold his coal yard which he had operated since 1918, and to this days owns and manages, with Mrs. Tenkely, a dance hall. In politics this man of fhe success story engaged, in civic government from 1913 to 1935 when he dropped out of politics. He was councilman 17 years in all, serving with seven different mayors. He fought for laws against air pollution and won, and he accomplished other things in the community interest. Pr. Michael Joo 19.42, Geza Bruger 43.42, Anthony Horvath, Sr. 44.10. 2. Ten years service on the board to provide care for polio victims at* St. Catherine Hospital, leader in fund drives for the Boy Scouts, general manager of the Blind and Crippled Manufacturing Association providing work for handicapped persons, director of the East Chicago Property Owners Association, the local tavern owners association, member of the East Chicago Chamber of Commerce, supporter of churches, member, often chairman or president, of various social, civic, fraternal or beneficial organivations in East Chicago, World War II subchairman and dynamo in the sale of war bonds — these accomplishments are not all of John William Tenkely, Hungarian American of many talents and boundless enthusiasm for worthwhile service. Perhaps the greatest of Mr. Tenkely’s noble services is the wonderful fact that he has helped more than 500 other immigrants become citizens of the United States. Mr. Tenkely married Emma Johannes ' of East Chicago. Their five children, married, and eight grandchildren.
