THE DINNER Friends and acqüaintances recently, December 20th, honored Mr. and Mrs. Michael Tar, members of Branch 36, with a farewell dinner for the couple who have moved to California. The affair was held in the hall of the Hungarian Independent Reformed Church, Detroit. Mr. Tar, a worker at Ford’s for 30 years, had in mind retirement in (the Golden State with Mrs. Tar w hen he realized his pension a short while ago. Their desire is now- an accomplished fact. In California Mr. and Mrs. Tar are enjoying close ties for they have two married daughters and grandchildren there, all members of Branch 525, Los Angeles. Remaining in Detroit is another daughter, Mrs. John Seres, and her ;son, botjj members of Branch 36. The sentimental occasion was opened by John Simo, president of the Szekler Hungarian Federation, and grace was said by the Reverend John Paul Nagy, Reformed minister. Stephen Lukacs, field supervisor and branch manager, very successfully filled the role of toastmaster. Toastmaster Lukacs greeted the assembled guests,, then called upon Michael Biro to sing Szekler Hungarian melodies. Mr. Biro’s beautiful renditions seemed to carry away his listeners to old Transylvania, home of. the Szekler branch of the Magyars, and his efforts were visibly deeply appreciated by the audience. The main speaker, the Reverend John Paul Nagy, reviewed the life of Mr. and Mrs. Tar, and he begged God’s blessings upon the departing pair. The couple was moved to tears as they expressed their heartfelt (thanks for the many honors received by them. Mr. and Mrs. Tar promised that, although very many miles away, they would never forget in their new home their good friends in Detroit, and that their California doors would ever be open to visitors from “back home”. Others spoke and festivities continued after the singing of the National Anthem until the early hours of the morning. The fine dinner and the delicious pastries were expertly prepared by five women cooks under the leadership of Mrs. Emery Balazs.
