PAGE 16 Verhov ayJournal April 18, 1951 POWER CITY NEWS SPRINGDALE. PA. AND VICINITY by Edward A. Mattie Branch 296 On Saturday, March 31st, an un- j usually large number of memebrs spent a most enjoyable evening at the Verhovay Home. A chicken paprikas supper was served by the Ladies Auxiliary, and very excellent dance music was furnished by Horvath Guszti and his orchestra. Unlike Mr. Horvath’s music at his previous appearance here last fall, this music was really something to hear. One could see that it made the crowd feel gay and carefree, determined to have a good time. In fact, a spirit or feeling seemed to be present which is usually found only in a New Year’s Eve crowd. Appreciation for the work and efforts of your officers can be shown in no greater way then by the members enjoying themselves with a true fraternal spirit as during that night. Although some of the local members who promised to be present at this affair failed to appear, there were a number of out-of-town guests. They were from -Johnstown, Pittsburgh, Ebbensburg, Yatesboro and from Cleveland and Lorain, Ohio. An additional event during ehe evening was the awarding of a $100, $50, and a $25 U.S. Savings Bonds. The lucky persons were Joseph Rovnanik. Spring-dale; Miss Joan Plosky, Rural Ridge; and Joseph Antal, Arnold in that older. The committee in charge of this event consisted of Alex Sarkady, Alex Toaso, Paul Tarpav. and Ed Mattie. TOURNAMENT Chicago here we come! The month before the tournament seems to pass so slowly. But, I suppose that we will get there eventually. Of the six bowlers going to represent Branch 296, Jim Balku, Ed Mattie, and Steve Üveges, Sr. have weathered previous tournaments. Bowlers participating for the first time are Alex Üveges, Steve Üveges, Jr., and Nick Koricich. After all the hullabaloo at the captains' meeting in Youngstown last year, I expected to see a decrease in team registrations. But what a surprise! Instead, there is a considerable increase in the number of registered teams. At the beginning of bowling season, the team started out in first place. With competition getting more difficult, the team fell to third place. And eventually it ended in a tie^ with the Yankees for the secoftd position. Come rain or shine, however, May 4th will find us in Chicago'preparing for the following day’s keen competition. LADIES AUXILIARY The awarding of prizes mentioned above was for the benefit of the Ladies Auxiliary. Its purpose was to help defray the expense of a deep freeze which was purchased for their kitchen. Although the results did not entirely meet expectations, it was of some help to the auxiliary. A vote of •thanks goes to the many members who gave so generously towards this end. Special mention is made also for the outstanding work of Mrs. George Bauaman and Mrs. John Balia in giving a big boost to the income of the affair. I think that it is proper at this time to emphasize that we, as members and fraternalists, should support the Ladies Auxiliary in their work as much as posible. For, it is through their efforts that the Sports Fund and the Disabled Members Fund of Branch 296 has been able to be in existence. Through the Sports Fund members ; are given the opportunity to take part in the sport and recreational 'activities of the branch. And through the Disabled Members j Fund financial assistance is given to members. For the past several years | that this fund has been in operation I a number of members have received j benefits. Quite often when a member j becomes disabled through sickness, { accident, or old age, he „is in dire j need of financial assistance. It is . | the purpose of this fund to. give such members an opportunity to maintain their life insurance policies and thereby their membership status. This aid \ is especially appreciated by the aged j members of the branch who would | find it difficult to carry on other- j wise. * * * The Ladies Auxiliary held their latest meeting on March 14th. After their usual business session, refreshments were served to the members. The most recent person to join the women in their work is Mrs. Alex Toaso of New Kensington. Membership to the auxiliary is open to all women members of Branch 296. Anyone wishing to join them may do so at their meeting which is j held on the Wednesday after the * regular monthly branch meeting (se- j cond Sunday of each month). Whether you are young or old there is n place for you in the organization. * * * A social affair is held every last; J Wednesday of the month at the Verhovay Home. COMING EVENTS On Sunday, May 13th, following the regular monthly meeting, held at 4:00 P.M.. a small ceremony will be held in honor of Mothers Day. Mothers are requested to be present at this event. * * * Two big events that are being planned for this year are a gigantic picnic and a 35th Anniversary Banquet in the late Summer. MISCELLANEOUS Members of Branch 296 extend their deepest sympathies and condolences to the immediate family of Frank Szuch who pased away on Saturday, March 11th, after a lengthy illness. * * * Another one of our young members has answered the call to colors; this New York Couple Wed In Colorful Ceremony At St. Paul's Church MR. AND MRS. PATRICK KEEGAN On Saturday, February 3rd, 1951, Miss Gloria Juhasz, lovely daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Juhasz of New York City, and Mr. Patrick Keegan, also of New York, were united in marriage in colorful ceremonies at St. Paul Thet Apostle’s Roman Catholic Church on 59th St., with the Rev. Ft. J. C. Hearne officiating. A large group of relative», friends and well wishers attended the beautiful ceremonies, praying for the happiness of the charming couple. Following the ceremony, the wedding- party went to the reception which was held at Hans Jaeger’s Hall, 85th St., and Lexington Avenue. Matron of Honor at the wedding ceremony was Mrs. Margaret Tyukody, sister of the bride. Miss Helen Juhasz, a member of Branch 48, was bridesmaid, and Misses Eleanor Elenchik, Betty Dobesh and Irene Heitman were flower girls. Best man was Roger Keegan and John Dosher, Bob Gilson, James Keegan and Joseph Higgins served as ushers. After a honeymoon in Pennsylvania, Washington and Maryland, the Keegans returned to New York City where they made their home. Former Tennis Champion And Husband Join Verhovay Recent arrivals in the United States, Mr. and Birs. Tárnái recently joined the Verhovay (to the tune of $7,500 worth of life-insurance protection), at Branch 573, the branch of the New Americans from Hungary, in Cleveland, O. District Manager Leslie J. Dus, manager of branches 14, 366 and 573, secured their membership applications. Mr. Tarnai works in one of the largest motor factories in Cleveland. His wife, the former Alice Florian, has been Central European tennis champion in the singles classics, up to last year, when in preference to the championship she chose the role of a loving housewife and withdrew from the tennis courts. A picture of Mrs. Tarnai in action on the tennis courts on which she won innumerable trophies, honors and prizes, is shown one enlisted in the Navy. On April 2nd, Jesse Radvansky departed for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station where he will receive boot training. * * * Rumor has it that Leonard Blakowski, last year’s ace bowler,, tvas married sometime last month. As' yet there is no confirmation as to where, when, and to whom. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Tarnai elsewhere in this issue. The Verhovay F.L Association is happy to welcome the Tarnai’s to the United States and into the growing family of Verhovayans! Grandma and grandpa were on their way to visit the children. “Heavens! I forgot to turn off the electric iron!’’ Replied grandpa “It’s o.k. Nothing will burn because I forgot; to turn off the water in the bathtub.”
