MAY 16. 1951 NO. 5 DETROIT BR. 500 MEN’S TEAM CLEVELAND BR. 366 WOMEN WIN CHAMPIONSHIP IN TOURNAMENT — Complete Prize List and Tournament Story To Be Published In next Issue. — Due to the fact that the 8th Verhovay National Bowling Tournament ended! just two days before the closing date of this issue, if was impossible to make this our usual TOURNAMENT EDITION. Neither the checking of the scores had been completed, nor are any of the pictures taken of the event are ready yet, but even if that would not be the case, it would be impossible to put the entire tournament material in print within two days. So we request' our bowlers’ and Howling fans' indulgence until the June issue of the Journal/ which will be our special TOLRNAMENT ^EDITION, featuring the complete* prize list, the story of the events surrounding this most successful tournament a;id all the other data that are of interest to those who attended this year’s great event in Chicago. At this time we can only announce the five leaders on each event. The data still are subject to revision though it may be assumed that they are correct. CHARLES WITH SOUTHERN BRANCH MANAGERS — Enthusiastic Cooperation On Part of Branch Officers In Southern Mining Field Results in All-Time Production Record for the Verhovay. — Elmer Charles, Field Supervisor of Organizing Field II., Manager of Branch 296, Springdale, Pa., returned from a 17 day trip through Verhovay’s southern coal fields with an amazing result that broke all previous production records for the Verhovay. In cooperation with the managers and officers of 17 branches in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, he secured 85 new members for a total of $98,000 worth of insurance in the 15 days he spent in these branches. Br. 343, Williamson, W. V’a. Mr. Charles wishes to express his sincere thanks to Mr. Janies Szuch, Manager of Br. 25, Mt. Hope, W. Va., and his family, for the wonderful hospitality shown to the 20 branch-presidents and managers attending a meet­ing on April 15th at his home where Field Supervisor Charles discussed the organizing problems and the plans for the current campaign with those pre­sent. It was a splendid meeting and all managers and presidents pledged their wholehearted support, a pledge w hich they follow ed up by action as the results show. All of the branch-managers whom Mr. Charles succeeded in contacting (17 out of 20, three having been away) showed 100% cooperation and a splendid fraternal spirit that made him confident of our continued progress ni this area. Mr. Charles also wishes to acknowledge the wonderful reception gi\on io him by the Kelemen family while working in Cumberland, Ky., and to Mr. and .Mrs. Lawrence of Cumberland, Ky., who for the second lime had treated him in a hospitable and friendly manner surpassing the best traditions of Verhovay fraternalism. Mr. Lawrence, a businessman in Cumberland since 1919, now a successful coal mine operator and broker, took time out from his busy establishment to practice Verhovay brotheriiness and earned the sincere appreciation of his helpful attitude not only of Mr. Charles but of the entire Home Office. We sincerely hope that he will continue supporting Verhovay’s advancement in the same enthusiastic and helpful manner tor many-many years to come! Mr. Charles as well as the Home Office wish to thank all of the 17 b-anch-managers with whom he had opportunity to work for the progress of the Association. They have proved that teamwork and cooperation will ac­complish miracles. With this 15-day campaign they again have stepped in the foreground upholding the 65 year old tradition that remembers the miners of old as the fathers of the organization and their sons as the champions of its progress.
