OFFICIAL COMMENT THE FIRST STEP TO THE NATIONAL CONVENTION Before the National Convention can be held in 1951 several very important steps must be taken. In the first place, the eligible branches must elect representatives to the District ^Sessions and secondly, the representatives of the Districts must elect delegates to the National Convention. Today we shall consider through question and answer form only the first step, that is the election of district representatives and alternate representatives by the branches. Q. When will the election of district representatives and alternate representatives take place? A. In the month of December, 1950. Q. Will all branches elect district and alternate representatives? A. No. Only those will elect district and alternate representatives whose adult membership is at least 25 but not more than 399. Q. What action can be taken by branches with less than 25 adult members? A. These branches may communicate their suggestions or motions in writing to the District Sessions to be held in 1951. Q. How about those branches which have an adult membership of 400 or more? A. Any branch having 400 or more adult members will be a District in itself and all members of that branch may participate in its own district meeting to be held in 1951, after Home Office notification. Q. What are the requirements for election as district or alternate representative by the branches? A. The person elected must be an American citizen; he must be a member of the Association in good standing; he must have attained age 21 on or before the day of the election; he has to be a member of the Death Benefit and Sick Benefit Departments for at least 2 years; he must have a death benefit membership certificate of at least $500; and in the English-speaking branches he must be a native of this country or have attended the American elementary schools, if not a native of this country. Any war veteran member who due to illness or injury incurred in World War II could not be reinstated into the Sick Benefit Department shall be eligible to be a District Representative or Alternate if he meets with the rest of the requirements. Q. Who cannot be elected a district representative or alternate, even though he meets with all the requirements stated in the previous answer? A. The members of the Board of Directors, the members of the Auditing Committee, the National Officers and those having a contract with the Association from which they derive their main income are ineligible to become district representatives or alternates. Q. Can a member who belongs to two branches be elected as district representative and/or alternate at each branch? A. No member shall be elected district representative and/or alternate from more than one branch. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE VERHOVAY F. I. Q. Will those branches with adult membership of 400 or more also be forwarded the Board of Directors recommendations for By-Laws amendments, for action in the month of ’December? A. Yes. The above information is presented to all of our members with the hope that preparatory information of this kind will better enable the branches to elect the best possible men and women for the positions of district representatives or alternate representatives. The best interests of our Association will be served only if more and more members take an active part in the operation of our society. We would appreciate it indeed if this Official Comment would be reviewed periodically, especially at the branch meetings each and every month until the December meetings are at hand.
