i PAGE 8 Verhovay Journal _______.________________________January ia, two I 1950 Tournament City News APPLICATIONS FOR ENTRY PLANS, DATES, SCHEDULES In keeping with our promise in last month’s Tournament City News, the plans, dates, schedules and all other data of the 1950 Tournament will, be briefly reviewed in the following for the information of all intended participants and visitors of this grand Vvent. The 7th Annual Verhovay — FRANK BROGLEY AND ALBERT B. ARI MEMORIAL — National Bowling Tournament, dedicated to the memory of the late Police Sergeant Frank Brogley of Youngstown, Ohio, former Director of the Verhovay F.I.A., and the late Albert B. Ari, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Treasury Department, former Chairman of the Board of Directors and Vice-President of the Verhovay F.I.A., the Pioneers of Verhovay’s National Sports Program, will be held in Youngstown, Ohio, on Friday (evening), Saturday and Sunday, May 26-28, 1950, at the Champion Recreation alleys. THÉ TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE The Tournament starts on Friday, May 26, 1950, at 6 p.m., at which time the teams of the Youngstown area (including northeast Ohio and - western Pennsylvania) will proceed with the 5-Man and .V Wo man event. Saturday, May 27, at 8 a.in., the team events will be continued to be followed later in the day by the Two- Mian, Two-Woman and Individual event's. Sunday, May 28, at 8 a.m., the Two-Man, Two-Woman and Individual events will be continued until the conclusion of the Tournament. Complete schedules containing the assignments of the teams, doubles and individuals will be mailed to all team captains one month ahead of the Tournament date. ACCOMODATIONS The Tournament participant's and guests will be accomodated in four hotels located in the downtown section of Youngstown, all within walking distance to’ each other as well as the Champion Recreation Building. Rooms for 2, 4 and 5 persons will be available. Present rates, subject to changes, range from $2.50 per person iii the larger rooms to $3.50 and up peh person in the double l ooms., Reservation forms will be mailed to all team captains after all applications for entry will have been approved which will be shortly after the deadline date, March 31', 1950! Complete and up to date information on all matters pertaining to accomodations will be furnished at that time. Applications for entry must be mailed before midnight March 31, 1950, and applications postmarked at a later date will not be considered. All applications must be accompanied by the payment in full of all entry fees as- specified in the SCHEDULE OF ENTR1 FEES appearing in this edition. (Entry fees are the same as last year.) In view of the late deadline date, AVERAGE SHEETS also must ACCOM I’ANY the applications for entry. Entry blanks will be available by the end of February. Requests for applications for entry, addressed to Verhovay Tournament Committee, Mr. John Sabo, National Auditor, 436 Fourth Avenue, Pittsburgh 19, Pa., should be mailed before the end of February. The number of teams requiring entry blanks must be indicated. In order that the complete Tournament schedules may be prepared and mailed to the teams one month ahead of the tournament date, as requested by the great majority of the bowlers, all requirements must be FULLY MET by March 31, 1950, the final date set for tournament entries. No exceptions will be made under any circumstances and bowlers are urged to exercise (he same care and punctuality in making applications as they are used to observing at all) ABC and WIBC sanctioned tournaments. PRIZES AND TROPHIES Championship awards are made on the basis of total actual scores (without handicap). The Champion Men’s Team will receive the Frank Brogleyv Memorial Trophy and the Champion Women’s Team will receive the Albert B. Ari Memorial Trophy. Each member of these champion teams will also receive a suitable medal. Each true champion in the other events (actually scoring the highest number of pins), shall be awarded a trophy-Money prizes will be based on total scores (including handicap). Money prizes will compare favorably with those awarded last year. A schedule of the prizes cannot be presented at this time, because the size and number of the prizes will depend partly on the number of teams participating and partly on the outcome of the Tournament Financing Campaign. However, an estimated total of about $5,000.00, (about $1,000 more .than last year) may be anticipated at this time. entertainment A dance will be held on Saturday evening, May 27, at 8 p.m., in the Kálvin Hall of the Hungarian Evangelical and Reformed parish on Mahoning Ave., a few minutes ride from the downtown section. A buffet banquet and dance will be held on Sunday, May 28, beginning at 5 p.m., also at the Kálvin Hall, including all the facilities -of this entirely new building. The buffet-banquet, to be prepared by the ladies of the Hungarian Ev. and Ref. The buffetdinner will be served continuously from 5 p.m., to 7:30 p.m., both in the ball room and the dining room. Music on Sunday night will be furnished by two orchestras, one for the dancers in the ball room and one for entertainment in the “Night of Budapest” club room. Between dances, the championship trophies will be presented, announcement will be made of the leading money winners and the Grand Event of the Tournament Financing Campaign will be held. Various attractions in addition to the events outlined will be provided. Both the Saturday and Sunday dances and the buffet-dinner on Sunday night will be free to all bowlers. Tickets will be enclosed with all other informative literature in the envelopes presented to the captains at registration. Tentative plans are being made for Hungarian style lunches to be served at reasonable rates at Kálvin Hall both on Saturday and Sunday. Information pertaining thereto will be furnished at registration. HEADQUARTERS Tournament headquarters will be at the Hotel Pick-Ohio where all bowlers will be required to register upon arrival in the Tournament City. A well staffed reception committee will be at the disposal of all arrivals and the Tournament officials will be on hand at all times to anyone seeking information or assistance.
