Page 6 Verhovay Journal SPORTS 429 BOWLING By THE FERRET “THE BOWLER’S PRAYER” “300” “Lord give me grace, To bowl a score So high that even I When telling of it Afterwards May never need to lie.” Yes siree, that’s the ambition Of all bowlers — to bowl that “hard-to-get 300” game. Heck, I’d be glad to bowl over 157 — my highest so far. The 429 gals are bowling a very nice average this year. We all have our ups and downs, but as a rule we manage to keep the average pretty near what we started out with. Verhovay Insurance No. 429 leads with high team 3 game series, we are in third place for high team single game, and our Mary Kuritar leads the list with high individual single game — which isn’t hard to take. November 25, 1943 KILLED IN ACTION By EDYTHE ANNE OROSZ A home-made fishing tackle, And an old straw hat, \ Lay idle in the corner Just where he left them at. He grew up all so sudden; It seems just like a dream; As though ’twas only yesterday, He was fishing by the Stream. He was bare-foot and happy, And so tanned by the sun; Playing by the rippling stream, And having loads of fun. I was happy just to see him, This carefree lad of mine; When he romped through the woodland, Or played beneath the pine. His eyes were bright as diamonds, They had that certain gleam; His laugh came smooth and easily Like the ripple of the stream. Now I stand on the hilltop, With a message in my hand; It reads: “Killed in Action On some foreign land”. I close my eyes and listen, For I seem to hear his voice; It echoes through the woodland And it makes my heart rejoice. Yes, it echoes through the woodland, And it’s planted with the trees; It floats o’er all the meadow Like the humming of the bees. I stumble blindly onward To the place he called his home; And think of when he promised From here he’d never roam. On opening the door I see The fishing pole and hat, Laying idle in the corner — Just where he left them at. <
