November 25, 1943 VERHOVAY SPORTSMEN of BRANCH 164 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -----------------______________________________ Verhovay Journal It’s almost four years since I first started covering the happenings of Branch 164. Many things have occurred; some only of local interest; some again were important enough to be published to all members of our organization. To my belief, the ceremony I witnessed at our November meeting, had more than local interest. At that meeting, Mrs. John Simko, National Chairman of the Hungarian Committee of the Treasury Department’s War Saving Staff, presented the Treasury Department’s Citation to our Secretary, Ernest Kunstadt. I believe this to be the same citation our Home Office received at the September Convention and I' am, as we all are, very proud to know that Secretary Kunstadt is the first branch officer of our great organization to receive a citation of this kind. I am sorry there were no photographers on hand to commemorate this occasion in a picture for publicity. In her speech, Mrs. Simko spoke of the importance of War Bonds and the importance of having salesmen go out and secure these Bonds. She emphasized the fact that our secretary is not only a salesman but “The Salesman”. I know that our secretary worked hard to earn this Citation and he will continue this work to insure Victory. MILITARY NEWS. I have told you in my last article that our Party was a great success. We have forwarded sixty-four Christmas presents, not only to our members, but to soldiers who perhaps have never heard the Verhovay name. Our Christmas presents were sent early and have been received by some of the soldiers expressing their appreciation to our organization. Permit me to quote excerpts from their letters. “I just received the money order and I want to thank Verhovay Br. 164 for their thoughtful remembrance in sending me this very thoughtful Christmas gift. 1 sure appreciate it. Sincerely yours, (signed) Pfc. RICHARD KOSTY.” “Thanking you very much for the gift, also for the thought that Verhovay Fraternal is behind the Soldiers of our Country. Let me remind you again that Sunday, December 19, is the date for our “Kiddie’s Christmas Party” at 333 W. North Ave. Bring all the Kiddies and we’ll do everything to see that they have a good time. * « * Our big Victory New Year’s Eve Dance Celebration will be held on December 31st, at 4240 W. Irving Park Road. Let’s all be there. Naturally, I want to remind you that Friday, December 3rd, is Election Day and will be the day that, we make our plans for the coming year. There was one very important decision, suggested, discussed and accepted at our November meeting. It was proposed and accepted that for the duration, members of Br. 164 will pay a special assessment of five cents a month. This fund will cover the expenses of Br. 164 in our undertakings to keep our boys in Service happy. Please understand that this special assessment is not compulsory, but the small sum of five cents a month will give us a bigger opportunity to keep up the morale of our soldier boys. Morale will vein the war and I know we will all be glad to sacrifice everything we have just to finish the war and get our loved ones home. So please pay your special assessment and have the satisfaction of knowing that you are in Br. 164. That Branch that has “Done it Again”. Just me, MARGARET STANGRET, Publicity Agent. 1427 So.
