I believe it will be more timely to write about the Convention and the results. My information was received from some of our delegates. I’ll try not to be partial to the English or Hungarian speaking branches and just give you the facts the way they registered in my mind. There is no question that the English speaking branches, influenced by the war and our big Service Flag with 4126 stars, have gained in the management of bur organization. Directors Ari, Brogley and Dr. Prince where re-elected, and Richard J. Phillips was elected with Member .Fa!ussy, a young lawyer from New York although one of the 2nd generation represents a Hungarian branch, and Miss Phillips elected as members of the Auditing Committee. At last, but not least, I must mention Member Sabo who will be our Auditor from Jan. 1st on. We all know that D! action Ari and Brogley had the confidence of the English, speaking branches, while Dr. Prince and Member Falussy had the backing of the Hungarian delegates. The second generation should be proud of the results, but it is up to us, now, to show that we are for the Verhovay not only in writing newspaper columns, but out in the field where there is lots of room for improvement. The war should not be an excuse for achievement and that goes for one of our re-elected directors who blames the standstill of our English branches on the war. Let’s not look in our activities; let this be social or fraternal matters always with open hands to our Home Office; let’s not depend our growth in baseball, bowling or basketball teams; but let’s all go out and show our American public that we are a good dependable Life Insurance Organization. Personally, I had the pleasure of spending a few hours at the opening night of the Convention in the Hotel Fort Pitt. It was indeed a pleasure meeting Jolán Lucas, who now is not only a friendly neighbor but a good friend, and many of the older and younger delegates. The results of the Convention are not known to us in detail yet, but we may all hope that the two weeks labor will be very beneficial to our organization in the next four years. BULLETIN ABOUT OUR BOYS From now on I’m 100% for the Army. 100% as the man whose name I used for the last five years, is an “Honest to Goodness” good Buck Private in the good old W. S. Army. As of October 12th, Member Anthony John Stangret has joined the Army. At present I just don’t know what to say or what to write. There is probably only one thing I can say. I’m proud of Tony as I am proud of every good Verhovay soldier. Alex Bodnar is anothér member of ours who left recently for the Army with Andy Dobis Jr., the son of one of our Charter members. I’m sorry to inform you that Louis Sera is in a hospital somewhere in Texas, with a broken leg. Joe Kolosy also has a broken leg, which mishap happened while he was on manuvers. He is in the Hospital at Camp Roberts, California. Corp. Edward Exner is recuperating in the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, while Corp. Steve Tarnoczy is on an extended sick leave. Pvt. Arthur Irocky informs us that he has visited the Station Hospital in Fresno, California, and has spent several * 1 days with Pvt. , John Kosi. He had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Kosi out there as she was visiting her wounded soldier boy. Pvt. Irocky has landed a good job in the Army. He operates a motion picture projector and spends lots of his time with W.A.C.’s. No wonder he writes that the camp is not bad, but he is still willing to “give California back to the Indians” and live in the Middle West. Sgt. Julius Jones got tired of living in Alaska and had himself transferred to England where he enjoys the English hospitality. It’s a pleasure to read Pvt. Ted Sabo’s letter in which he thanks Verhovay for the dictionary that enables him to write Hungarian to his mother. I do not know where Ted is but as soon this war is over he will have a good story for us. P.F.C. Marvin Kunstadt has left the Hawaiin Islands to do some work with the usual Military secrets. Corp. Robert Papp is now somewhere in Italy and is sure glad to be closer to Berlin. Bobby is not the complaining type, but in his last letter he did quite a bit of complaining about the German tactics when withdrawing from occupied territory. Robert promised his young lady sister a good picture of himself, but the Germans cleaned out every photographer’s establishment, and there isn’t a chance to get a picture until he hits Berlin. Sailor Wm. Chudek finished his boot training at Great Lakes and is home for a well earned visit with his family. Ernie Kunstadt got home for a weekend visit to see his one and only “Slug” who is really getting up in the world. Sgt. Frankie Kantor sends his latest card from Colorado, while his young Mrs. is making her home with the elder Kantor’s in Chicago. I’m very sorry to write about the mishap of Ervin Tury who was seriously injured in a Base Explosion. Our sincere wish goes for Ervin’s quick recovery. Before I fininsh, let me give you a report about our October 2nd social, which was one of the biggest in our branch’s history. It shows again that there is lots of social activity in our Verhovay branches if the branch management has the ambition to work. Branch 164 started and finished a good job. Seventy Verhovay soldiers and sailors will have a good and pleasant Christmas and 460 Verhovay 164 members will sit back with satisfaction to know that they did their share. Let me remind you that our November meeting, the first Friday of November, will be connected with a social. Let me remind you that we will have a big Christmas party for our children with Marge Kunstadt, Juvenile Secretary, and Elizabeth Csonka, lady vice-president, in charge. Let me remind you that our big New Year’s Eve Celebration will bring us together in one of the biggest halls on Chicago’s north side. Let me remind you (and this is very important) that the profits of our New Year’s Eve Party will go in our soldiers’ and sailors’ funds. Let me remind you that Branch 164 is still in the War Bond business and it is your duty to BUY — BUY — AND BUY! Just me, MARGARET STANGRET, Publicity Agent, 1427 So. Sawyer Ave. Chicago, 23, 111. THE DIVINF FIVE By KATHRYN RAW The divine fire comes to us mysteriously from the inner life. Often, the flame within burns uninvited—unwanted. The divine fire is the music of the spheres that is too beautiful to deny. From a dream-land comes the song that is to powerful to resist. In lonely moments of leisure the soft melody drifted to me — the melody of you! It told the end of a search. For in its haunting sound I found you! You — so young — so full of the joy of living! And when the long shadows of the night - tenderly enfolded the earth I heard your lovely music again In waking dreams I saw your laughing eyes filled with the divine fire. They beckoned me into that strange mysterious land where our souls wed through the mariiage of your melody and my song! The wind brought me the echo of your voice. It spoke softly to me of dreams — dreams of happiness for us to share! Eagerly, I reached out to grasp the fragile vision — and, O, Dear Heart! it vanished! Where did it go? Where are you? Why did I lose you when the fulfillment of my dreams was so near? We found the secret fire — the sacred twin flame within our souls! It was early one beautiful dawn when the sky was a glory 42» BOWLING BY THE FERRET We certainly have ourselves a bowling team to be proud of this season! I’m so elated with this gang of mine, that I’ll accept all challenges sent our way. We will keep all dates, and even if we lose the games wtih challengers, we’ll give them a fight for their money. Started the season with 10 gals, but things happened, and we now have five regular members, and two very good prospects. Ethel Koy had to quit under fire, “doctor’s orders” — Velma Handa does everything Ethel does, so for this season she’s out of the picture; Jeanette Horvath Parsons, is under orders from Dearborn's Recreation Dept. to teach a swimming class. Our two prospects are Ann Major and Lulu Bell, and Lulu is sold — Ann’s a tough nut to creak, no one has been able to sell Verhovay to Ann, although she attends all our social affairs. As for the men — well, last year The Old Ferret organized the men’s team. Will say the alleys we were able to acquire weren’t the best — but then the team was only beginning. Several remarks made to the effect that they didn’t want a female person handling a man’s team, gave me the brilliant idea to let’em go ahead on their own. To date, the men’s team is still in the embryonic stages. Several of the boys are bowling elsewhere, but not under the name of Verhovay. So much for the men, bless’em! Games rolled by the 429-ers put two of the girls in the high single class in the Springwells Ladies League, and makes the team near the top for high three game series. Mary Kuritar stopped the show with the first 200 of the season and Helen Kastura came near with her 191. Last season Ethel Koy broke 200, with a 201 on the last day. Our two prospects aren't hard to take, either, so let’s hope the old war ends soon, and we van have two good teams next season. Scores as follows: WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 20. Average to date Helen Kastura ................ .............. 131 138191 460 131 Mary Fisher............... ............. 90134 123 347 124 Jolán Lucas ...... ........................... 116 84117 317 105 WEDNESDAY. Also Margaret Turner’s girls in Youngstown — and then Frank Tinich out Chicago way has some good women's teams. Good bowling. you dear Verhovay Sportsmen.--------------v-------------of hues — soft rose — gold — and the palest blue! The sun threw its light upon the earth and dispelled shadows! It was then your hand clasped mine — to symbolize our oneness. We heard the soft singing of a bird. He was perched high in the old oak tree. While we listened to his song the beauty of it enchanted us. I tried to speak but no words could tell the love in my heart. Life was beautiful! Then — somehow — a barrier sprang between us. How did it happen? In my utter loneliness I’ve tiled to reach you. Won’t you come near to me? I need you! Was it fancy? — or, did you send the music I heard again within my heart’s secret chamber? I walked in the silent sb de where once we walked together. The leafy woods delighted me. The subtle whispering of the wind was so like your voice when you called me out of dreams! You were the music I glimpsed within myself! Dear Heart! let not shadows mingle with the divine fire in your soul! I remember how your slim long fingers — delicately moulded — yet so strong and powerful — swept majestically over the ivory keyboard of the piano. One day I asked you to play my favorite Chopin Étude. Before you could comply with my wish we were interrupted. Sometime — will you play the Etude for me? I will hear it — even though you are so far away! The wind will bring it to me in dreams! DOES NOTHING “Darling, I could sit here, and do nothing but look at you forever.” “Yeah, that’s what I’m beginning to think, too!” ■--------------v-------------SPORTS MERCHANTS LEAGUE SEPTEMBER 13.
