The Verhovay Br. 36 team of Detroit would like a home to home match series with some of the other branches. These matches would be preferred for April or the early part of May. Any branches who are interested, please contact Paul Szegő, 8555 Bouth Street, Detroit, Michigan. THE VERHOVAY SCORES FOR MARCH 15th. Hinky DinkBar Total A. Konkoly182 192 142 516 G. However, even the worst heartaches are healed by time, so I guess it’s about time to snap out of it. After all, this war can’t last forever, and in the meantime, I s’pose one can find satisfaction in improving one’s team, so that when another Tournament does roll around, we can be in there, certain of at least a fighting chance. So here goes to the planning of a bigger and better interest in VERHOVAY BOWLING. It has been brought to my attention that several members in neighboring branches are interested in organizing bowling teams. Can the Ferret offer the services of an experienced Bowling Team Organizer? Be glad to give all the help I can. Fraternally, NICK PALLA, Br. 130, East Chicago, Ind. teams? What’s the matter with the older folks? Bowling is no respecter of age; it invites young and old, fat and thin, good oi; bad beginners. Once you try bowling, you are a true convert. Some of our best bowlers are the older generation — it’s something that doesn’t tire one; all you have to do is stand at the foul line, heave a fourteen or sixteen pound ball straight down the alley, and wait for ten pins to fall. You have two turns to try and knock ’em all down. Then you can sit down, sip a cool, refreshing drink, gab with your teammates and await your turn again. It’s lots of fun, brings out those laugh wrinkles which makes for more charm and personality than all your well chiseled profiles. Makes a fella feel young again, and I can assure you that your popularity with the youngsters will rate several pegs higher as a result. How about it, Mrs. Joseph Demeter, (secretary of Br. 388 — Detroit’s Ladies’ Branch) bring out your members — and Mrs. Anna Horvath (secretary of the Verhovay Club), get some of those older club members interested. There is that active group of ladies who are faithful in their interest in Verhovay activities — Mrs. Csabi, Mrs. Trimai, Mrs. Marczis, Mrs. Azari, Mrs. Nyikon, and our own Mrs. Mary Horvath; countless others whose name I don’t know, but whose faces are familiar. All you have to do is meet me up at the West End Recreation Alleys some Sunday afternoon and we’ll slap the game around a bit? All my teammates will be glad to help all they can, too, so how about it, ladies? Which brings up another old “pet dream” of mine. Why can’t Detroit have it’s own bowling alleys in our very own Verhovay Home? I’ve heard so much about South Bend’s bowling alleys that it has inspired me to get some co-operation from all of you for our own alleys. Then when our boys “come marching home again” they can forget the MARCH 3 MarieGallovich 105 152 79 EthelKoy 144 117 117 MaryRaffee 93 83 107 MaryHorvath JolánLucas . 85 101 94 HelenKastura _ 148 161 126 MARCH11 JohnFisher 139 140 142421 Daniel; Robb 132 138 134 404 JohnLukas 142 172 161475 S. Golly, the thing could pay for itself in no time, and gather around the younger members which has been the dream of our older members. Notice who’s “top bowlers” in Verhovay circles — the South Bend fellas and gals — they have their own alleys to practice on at less cost than they would have to pay elsewhere. By the way, Congratulations to you South Bend Ladies of Branch 132 on winning the city Tournament for the second year. That’s a goal all of us can aim for. It calls for good team work, constant practice, and above all, GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP — getting along together continually. Gotta hand it to you, gals, that’s keen bowling! Now for my own two teams — you certainly held together and I’m proud of the example you are setting in Greater Detroit for good sportsmanship. Keep it up, we’ll head the top o’ the heap yet! That Kastura babe is certainly rolling ’em down there for high series, with Ethel Koy a close second. Mary Horvath substituting for Mary Raffee the last two weeks has helped the gals’ team win a couple of games. Marie Gallovich holds her own which is more than Ye Ferret is doing. Fisher rolled ’em down for a nice series, and with the aid of Robb, Horvath and Lukas won four points. Lucas didn’t bowl too badly after four weeks on the “graveyard shift”. All the fellas need is co-operation and good alleys — which last they will get next season at Allen Park Recreation. Might be able to report two teams each for men and women from present requests. The more the merrier, I always say. Which reminds me of a cute one — Asked what the definition of “optimism”, the instant reply was “he who works a crossword puzzle with a fountain pen” — S -, Good bowling wishes to all you sportsmen.
