MY FRIEND With patient, loving kindness You’ve sympathized with me, When all the world seemed upside down And justice ceased to be. You’ve listened to my troubles And soothed my racking nerves, When life’s highway was rough and hard You helped me ’round the curves. When no one else would bother To dry my doleful tears, You offered me your handkerchief And banished all my fears. You make my life worth living Because you are so true, If I amount to anything I’ll owe it all to you. * * * THE LONESOME PINE O lonesome pine upon the hill, Why do you stand so grave and still, Like a priestly figure with raising hand Sending a blessing o’er the land? Is it because a pretty maid And her lover are in your shelter laid? Is it because the Jack and Jill Who used to stroll upon your hill Are not to be seen (for their hearts are still) And they come no more for your cooling shade? (I can almost hear them laughing in glee As they carve their names on the old pine tree) Why do you stand there wailing and weeping? Don’t you know that the lovers are only sleeping? —Poems by HELEN HAMELLY Now In Our 55thy ear A milestone at which we are grateful for the steadfast confidence and good will that mark day-by-day relations between members, field force and Home Office staff.
