March 27, 1941 VERHOVAY SPORTSMEN of BRANCH 164 ------------------ CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -----------------____________:______Verhovayak Lapja Page T LOVABLE LOVE LYRICS By JOE VARGO Branch 248 Monaville, West Virginia III YOU’RE FISHING FOR MY HEART I know well just why, no use to deny, You say nice things in a romantic way; And then I surmise and I get wise To the loving kindness you display. YOU ARE FISHING FOR MY HEART! But not with a pole and line, But with cupid’s bow and dart! You want your love to be mine, YOU’RE FISHING FOR MY HEART! I knew it right from the start, More than just words can tell; I know you think I’m swell, YOU’RE FISHING FOR MY HEART/ IV IF YOU WERE MINE, DEAR The world’s in love with you, Can’t you see? And so am 1! And I say, I’m sincere. Life could be a cherry pie IF YOU WERE MINE, DEAR! Every single day would be a perfect day, Month after month, year after year; We’d be happy IF YOU WERE MINE, DEAR. Life would be ideal, I would be so thrilled, My dreams made real, and hopes fulfilled. Can’t you see, what I’m thinking of? Ours could be a heaven of love IF YOU WERE MINE, DEAR! With many things on my mind and many more things to write about, I just don’t know were to begin or just how to get started. Last month as I was busily preparing my article, we were in the middle of winter, and now it is spring, bringing the long awaited warm weather. MEETINGS There isn’t much to write about meetings, as our Sportsmen have time for everything, but it’s like pulling teeth to get them to a meeting which is for their benefit. It is quiet on the battlefront of the Senior’s meeting, which means no news from there either. There is a special Sportsmen meeting on the calendar for the reorganization of the baseball team, but we can not set a definite date because we are waiting for the good news from our Board of Directors. At the time this article is written, said Board is at a meeting where the sport allotment for Branch 164 is being discussed. SOMETHING NEW It is a great pleasure to announce that our ever famous Duke Soo is another uncle. I have an announcement from two good Branch 164 members, Mr. and Mrs. Geza Marosy, Jr., that a baby girl arrived at 8:25 a. m. on March 16th. Hef name is Baby Cynthia Gay. I do not know if the young lady has already joined the branch or not. IN MEMORIAM It is my sorrowful duty to announce the sudden death of Mrs. Helen Boisy, sister of Sportsmen Paul and James Kantor. Although not a member of Branch 164, the senior members, along with the Sportsmen in a body, express their deepest sympathy to the family, and placed a flower piece at the bier. In the death of Mrs. Boisy, our popular Frank Kantor, mourns his first cousin. MEMBERSHIP / I welcome, for the Sportsmen of Branch 164, to our group, Jack Zubor, none other than the brother of our Sportsmen Secretary. Rose Jakapovich and John Nagy, Jr., are two members transferred to us from the Junior Order, and I sincerely hope their names will be found in this column along with the older active members. I am inquiring about a certain Miss Helen Barby, member of Branch 164, living around 63rd St. She joined our organization early last October and promised several times to be at our social engagements, but no luck yet. How about it, Helen? I am sorry to notice that the twin ex-members, Hank and Moe, are not with us any longer. We enjoyed their company for three years, and will miss them if they don’t show up in a hurry. Snap out of it, Hank and Moe, the baseball season is very near. SPORT The month of March surely kept our bowlers on the run. The big affair with South Bend, March 8th, will be remembered by many of us for a long time to come. Hats off to the Sportsmen 164 Ladies’ Bowling Team, They beat the unbeatable Ladies’ Team from South Bend by a handsome score. It was the first defeat the ladies of South Bend suffered in the last four years. They were in the habit of winning, but they took their first lost game as real Verhovay Sportsmen. : Branch 164 is not only proud of their lady bowlers but proud to know the South Bend Ladies’ Bowling Team is also a good Verhovay team. Our Men’s Team, as expected, lost to thé South Bend champions. We just couldn’t help it. The South Bend team is just too good at the present. Our team, consisting of Louis Molnár, Joseph Exner, John Kovach, John Fodor and Jim Costello, fought valiently, but South Bend had the edge on them. Well, South Bend not only beat Chicago. They beat Detroit by a much bigger score than they beat the Chicago boys. The second big affáir and the big upset, was the well advertised Fodor-Molnar Bowling Feud. The Fodor team was the favorite, and as favorites usually do, they won the first game. The second and third game went to the Molnár group, and naturally, with the last two games went the honors of, the evening. Allow? me to give you the score as I have received them. On the Molnár team, Johnny Barnak, better known as South Side Johnny, bowled 569, Louis Molnár 503, Ollie Chudek 450, Mary Molnár 443 and Ernie Kunstadt, Jr., a measly 423. On the Fodor team, Johnny Kovach bowled an even 500, Duke Soo 494, Louis Fodor 472, Marge Fodor 461, and then the tail ender, Barbara Kovach, with 398. The prizes donated by our senior secretary went to the Molnár team, and in turn was given to Captain Janovich for refreshments, as all the bowlers and fans were invited to the captain’s house after the bowling for a celebration. If I am informed correctly, the last auto left the Janovich’s at 4:45 a. m., Sunday. As advertised in our sports calendar, our bowling teams will travel to Detroit, April 5th, for bowling against Branch 36. Out Senior Vice-President, Frank Soo, Senior Secretary Mr. Kunstadt, and Captain Janovich, will lead a caravan to the automobile city. The party will consist of Mr and Mrs. Louis Fodor, Mr. and Mrs. John Kovach, Joseph Exner. Mr. and Mrs. William Feifar, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Louis Molnár, Duke Soo, Mrs. Janovich and Mr. Zavatkay, the head booster for the Branch 164 bowlers. Oh, yes, the Sportsmen Secretary, Bob Zubor, his brother Jack, TOny and I are starting, too, for Detroit, but 1 can’t guarantee our arrival. It’s not only the tires; it’s the car I’m referring to. I hope and sincerely wish out two teams will show Detroit that Chicago, and especially Branch 164, has a lot of good bowlers. ENTERTAINMENT I have given my report about the South Bend Bowling Match, and I will tell my readers how the Sportsmen of Branch 164, in co-operation with our mother lodge, recei'-e good friendly neighbors. An hour before starting time, our representatives were at the bowling alleys with 100 and some sandwiches for our hungry guests. After the bowling, the South Bend group, consisting of 40 members, travelled in their special bus to the Harmony Hall, where the members of Branch 164 received them. A big chicken dinner, prepared by our Senior Lady Vice-President, Mrs. Rak, was sérved to them seasoned with Gypsy music. After supper, a few speeches made our friendship stronger, and then the dancing began with Suto’s seven piece union orchestra. The Harmony Hall was crowded to capacity arid everybody, especially our South Bend neighbors, had lots of fun. It was after 1 o’clock Sunday morning before our guests could be gathered to leave for South Bend. Our guests had only one request, to keep this friendly competition up for many years to come. My space does not allow me to thank all our members for their hearty co-operation, but our senior secretary has taken care of that in the Hungarian edition I am again requested to remind all Chicago and surrounding Verliovay members of June 22nd, when our big 55th Jubilee celebration will be held at Frank’s Grove, at 117 th and Homan Avenue. I’m sneaking in with another announcement, that our annual picnic, in co-operation with Branch 342, will bring us together this year on July 6th. The placc is the same as last year, the Silver Leaf Grove, which is 6800 on Milwaukee Avenue. More about this picnic will be in my next issue. FLASH NO. X Little Steve Risko claims he’ll be exempt from the Draft because the Army doesn’t have shoes small enough for him. We hate to disappoint you. Steve, but instead of a size 4 pair of shoes they’ll give you one shoe, size 8, and let you make the best of it. Pleasant marching drills! FLASH NO. 2 Mr. and Mrs. John Vash, the former Julia Kutska, wish to express their thanks to the branch for the lovely wedding gift sent to them. FLASH NO. 3 Louise Janovich is the president of the unorganized Bowling Widows. It seems Andy would rather bowl than eat, and how he loves to eat. FLASH NO. 4 Frank Kantor was seen in front of the Chicago Theatre, with three women. He believes in the adage “There’s safety in numbers.” FLASH NO. 5 Tony Sayer, of South Bend, was reluctant to leave Chicago on March 8th. I wonder if he hated to leave our company or just afraid to face his team mates after breaking the bottle? FLASH NO. 6 An Everhot Electric Roaster was presented to me for my birthday, by my husband, mother, dad, and sisters and brothers. You are all invited to the house for a duck dinner, provided, of course, you bring the I duck. ATTENTION! MEMBERS OF BRANCHES 288 and 432 . Crescent, Ohio Our next meeting, which is to be held in April, will be a joint meeting between Branch 288 and Branch 432 to discuss the affairs of the Verhovay Home. Since this will be an important meeting, members of both branches are urged to attend. Fraternally, PAUL NAGY, President Branch 432 MARTIN GERSEY, Secretary Branch 432.------------------O-----------------BRANCH 372 NOTICE Lorain, Ohio Branch 372 now meets on the second Thursday of each month instead of the second Tuesday, and the meetings are held at 1624 E. 30th Street. This change was made to enable our bowling members to attend the meetings. Fraternally, JULIUS CHASZAR, Secretary-Treasurer. FLASH NO. 7 I’ll not mention any names, but when certain married men, take their nephews’ kites and fly them to their end in a tree, spring is certainly here. Just me, Margaret Stangret, Publicity Agent 1427 So. Sawyer Avenue Chicago, Ulinois.
