Although the SPORT PAGE may be considered the men’s page, which for obvious reasons it largely is, it is open also—and with enthusiastic welcome— to the sports-minded girls and women of our Verhovay. Every Verhovay athletic or sports contest or achievement, whether by a branch or by an individual member, should find its way to our SPORT PAGE, without fail and in preference to any other publication. Our team is a first-class outfit composed of ex-high school and ex-college stars. We are coached by Jake McCandless, ex-coach of the Beaver Foils high school championship teams of 1934-35, 1935-36. We are willing to play out of town or at home. Yours in sports, J. LEWANDOSKI, 1703 4th Avenue Beaver Falls, Pa. SPORT FLASHES FROM BRANCH 36 Detroit, Michigan With the inauguration of the New Year, 1941, the boys from Branch 36 wish each and every Verhovay member and branch a happy and successful New Year, with prosperity for all. During Christmas Eve the boys from the 36 bowling team went caroling, and from the results, it was neither good or bad. Some say we sounded like a carol group singing over the radio; others that we sounded like boat whistles or a midnight group of cats doing their very best trying to reach high C. Well, anyway, the spirit was there and we were sincere. Everybody—Oscar Petoskey, Zoly Vincent, Ken Toth, Mike Szopo, Ernest Lada. Zoly Baki, Charles Papp, Andrew King and I had a very exciting time. But this is getting me off the sport track, so I will now commence reporting on our bowling. As you no doubt know, the Verhovay Bowling League plays every Sunday at 2 o’clock, in the West End Recreation, on West End and West Jefferson. With 13 weeks already rolled away, the Verhovay Branch 36 Bowling Team is tied for first place with Club 440, and has been improving and rapidly taking its opponents in strides. The standings in the Verhovay League up to December 22, 1940 are as follows: Standings of Verhovay Bowling League W L Pet T’al P’ts Pins Club 440 2710 8.35 Verhovay Br. 36 2514 10 .35 Papp’s Mkt 2415 8.32 Delray Cafe 1920 5.24 Mandell’s Bar 1623 7.23 Lane Service 1722 5.22 Yale Inn 1524 4.19 Petho’s Bar 1326 5.18 Team High;3 Games Mandell’s ______2668 Verhovay 362605 Team High; Single Game Verhovay 36_____________ 941 Verhovay 36____ 930 MandelTs ...___ 912 Individual High; 3 Games B. We are always in there till the last strike. We have received replies from Cleveland, Chicago and Lorain, and I will endeavor to schedule each and every one on a home and home match game basis. Chicago is already booked for April, and the date will be published when our schedule is completed. Until further news and sports, I bid “adieu” to all of you. Fraternally yours in sports, Frank A. The team wishes to book both home and out of town games with other Verhovay sports organizations. Arrangements can be made by writing to Steve Csonka, 140 Woodford Ave., Elyria, Ohio, or to Andrew Palagyi, 365 Vulcan Street, Elyria, Ohio. BOWLERS, NOTE How to Act on the Alleys Just for the sake of the bowlers who haven’t any manners, here are a few tips on how to act on the alleys. Dash into the alleys two minutes before starting time when it’s an important match. This soothes your team-mates’ nerves. Test the sliding qualities of each runway three or four times before each pitch. This always proves you are an expert. Wait until your opponent is ready to roll before going after your ball. He will surely want to kiss you if you do this often enough. If the hook isn’t coming up fast enough, dash across the next three alleys, using either a body check or rolling block upon anyone in your path. This is a sure dividend-payer in time. Carefully examine your thumb after every wild heave. When ball is headed for the pocket, start backing away from the foul line, slowly at first, gradually increasing speed until at the moment of impact you land in somebody’s lap. After delivering the ball, stand at the foul line. Whirl sharply just as your opponent arrives at the mark, or, better still, edge over slightly onto his runway. Do this often enough and you need have no worries about old age pension.-------------------O-----------------ALLIANCE BEGINS SPORTS ACTIVITIES AND SEEKS GAMES The Verhovay Athletic Club of Alliance, Ohio, has begun its sports activities for this season, which consist of basketball and bowling.
