Page 14 Branch 164 — Chicago, III. As I look back upon the years That slowly slipped away from me, I think of all the joys and tears That passed, and then, those yet to be. January, 1940. For those of you who did not attend our New Year’s Eye Celebration, I am indeed sorry. Everyone had the grandest time ever imagined. I cannot begin to describe the decorations, the food, the drinks, the girls, their gowns, the boys, the hilarity, nor the atmosphere. Neither can I say enough for the companionship of the crowd. It was as glorious and successful a celebration as ever was or ever will be held, here or else where. At this affair “Miss Verhovay 164 of 1940" was chosen. It was a carefully planned contest, run smoothly. The title now belongs to Miss Elsie Ujlaky, who deserves the honor. Elsie has been a pal to all the girls and fellows and has worked tirelessly for the benefit of the branch. I have requested the editor to publish a picture along with this article so that you may see her. Should yqu meet her, you will readily see why she was chosen “Miss Verhovay 164 of 1940”. Her personality and good fellow ship are her highest assets and may her reign keep her as sweet and uneffected as she is now. Her Maid of Honor only missed the title by a few votes. Miss Olga Chudek rates in personality and charm among the highest. Olga is just beginning to show her strides and although she did not win the contest, I know she will continue doing her best as secretary of the branch and one of it’s best sports. Because of the closeness of the vote, the committee decided to present the winner, Miss Elsie Ujlaky, with a beautiful diamond ring and to her Maid of Honor, Miss Olga Chudek, an evening gown. I congratulate both of you girls and wish you both luck in this year, 1940. A toast to you “Miss Verhovay 164 of 1940". ADVANCE NOTICES January 27 will find the Sportsmen as well as the seniors of Branch 164, enjoying- Pullman's first dance in four years. That’s Branch 96. I understand the group from South Bend will be there to dance and I’m counting on being there and meeting some of the other fraternal members. * * * A big Card and Bunco Party will be held Feb. 9th at 333 W. North Ave. This is actually the Sportsmen’s first attempt. We expect to see the entire Sportsmen group present and we promise you an interesting evening. Any prize you care to donate will be accepted graciously by our new lady vice-president, Elsie Ujlaky, who is in charge. This will be another of those affairs made possible by donations so there is no outgo and all income. * * * The seniors are planning a Dinner Dance to be held March 2 at the Dr. Herzl Hall. Don’t forget the date Sportsmen, let’s show our seniors how to have a good time. * * * February 3 belongs to the annual Rákóczi Masquerade. There’ll be a group from Verhovay there. If you don’t recognize them right away, peek under the masques. * * * A Mid-Winter House Party Is being considered now for Sportsmen only. A committee organized to make all the arrangements and the date will be somewhere in the near future. In case you’re interested, get in touch with Marge' Fodor, Elsie Ujlaky, Olga Chudek, or myself. * * * Discussions about our annual Spring Dance is being heard and there’s a committee at work on it already. ♦ * ■* * MEETINGS Our first meeting in 1940 opened as all meetings do. Report« were made by the various active committees. A suggestion was made to hold a House Party for the members. Because of our various activities, almost too numerous, this suggestion was vetoed as a club party but will be held privately in the near future. The meeting was adjourned followed in the usual way. * * * SPORTS Bowling. Nothing special to report about the bowlers. Every Monday night they can be seen bowling in three bright uniforms at Novotny’s Bowling Alley. They enjoy every minute of their game and it’s a great sport for spectators too. Basket-ball. Basket-ball practice is being held at St. Michael’s gym, 1639 N. Hudson Ave. every Thursday night. The boys are in great shape and believe that by the end of this month, they’ll be able to accept the challenge made by a team in New York. (If you see this New York, please get in touch with me again.) * * * Thanks to R. H. Hall for this Valentine Waltz. I’d like to write a midnight waltz Of love for you to dance: I'd fill it with arpeggios Of kisses and romance. I’d form it like a valentine Of crimson hearts and lace; And in each swinging, pulsing note I’d have your smiling face. Where I to write a midnight waltz, I wonder if you’d be For just one star-medallioned night ’ A valentine to me? Until next month, let’s be the best of friends.-Just me, MARGARET STANGRET, 1427 S.
