January 25, 1940. PAST. PRESENT AND FUTURISTIC BRAUCH 366 — CLEVELAND, OHIO Our initial effort in the year of our Lord 1940. What will it bring to our Verhovay members? Health, success and happiness are our wishes to all. New Year’s eve duly celebrated with several of our members at Verhoval hall and other places. A wonderful dinner prepared by our Mgr. Mr. John Matyas—in a home like atmosphere, and served by two of the loveliest girls in captivity, Marge and Doris.— Among the celebrities present were: Mr. Kalman Kolozsvary, newly elected president of branch 14, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szalay. Vice-President and Director of Verhovay Insurance Ass’n, Mr. and Mrs. Zidmond Kadar, Mrs. Gall who recently returned from Europe, Mr. Gus Bessenye, local barrister and prominent member of the West side English br. 367. Mr. Drotos, Mr. Reich and his pal Mr. John Kovach—two real sports. Mr. Frank Pinter former Prexy of br. 14 and many others whose names escapes our memory.—366 members at the party John Fritz Jr., Jos. Nagy, Paul Bolesic and Frances Schwartz who came with her father and mother. Among the highlights of the evening was our annual raffle, after a last minute of ticket selling the winning number was drawn by Mrs. Jos. Szalay. Mr. Steve Celiga, 2906 Ambler Ave., Cleve., O., was the winner of a beautiful portable electric radio. He has the best wishes of the Verhovay bowling team . Elsie Kolozsvary—over to an exclusive country club New Year’s eve—where they drink pink ladies instead of common ordinary highballs. Gizella Merk misinterped oui last column—What we meant was the gentlemen from the great open spaces—the farm—where men are men and some men farm hands and gasoline attendants—Anyway Gizella 'knows the price of the different grades of gas, oil, grease jobs, and how much air to put in the tires. We may be underestimating her intention but she might open a garage eventually. Betty Toth returning Christmas gift—the package almost as large as she—and in the same Vein-Our Christmas party. With the able assistance of Cal Karnya and Jos. Nagy, the party turned out to be a humdinger—plenty of refreshment, eats, and entertainment. 10 gifts were distributed.— A1 Kovach playing the part of Santa Claus. Ed Sepessy—another of Verhovay’s famous Son’s entertained us with a fine movie and it was well received—our thanks to you Ed, you are a real asset to our organization along with the rest of the regulars. Guests of honor were Wm. Torda. Jucey and Bill—one of these three donated a booby prize—Mary and Margaret Matyas came in and joined the fun, also our little song bird "Doris”. My but she’s a sweet child.—Emery and Marie were the life of the party.—Mike Buffalo likes to ride across Johnny Mantz’s manly shoulders—they are nice and broad—Blackie entertaining two lady friends Irene and Betty —pleasing personalities—Paul Bolesic wouldn't let Frances Schwartz out of his sight—We don’t blame him—Mr. and Mrs. John Pereczes sister and brother in law of our Jos. Nagy going to town. Some body brought in a mistletoe, and then the fun began—this part of the fun was enjoyed immensely by the men—nobody was bashful—Mrs. Kovach proved herself a real trouper—a good time was had by all. Br. 14—played host to several hundred Verhovay kiddies at a Christmas party held for their benefit Dec. 24,^1939. We donated our Christmas tree to them. The Committee of the Szalay banquet were in charge. Verhovay’s famous Son—Judge Louis Petrash is in great demand in Cleveland—no civic or Hungarian affair is complete if he is not there.—We are hoping he will someday consider the office of the Mayor here in Cleveland. Another of Verhovay’s famous Son’s former Gov. Martin L. Davey of Ohio—who gave the Hungarians excellent representation in his two terms—Our best wishes to you Governor in your future enterprises. We lamp in one of our issues— the “Ferret’’ will be back with us for the ensuing year—Welcome home Ferret old kid—How is the baby? Good Luck to Elmer J. Halas— Here’s hoping he will not have to go overseas. To Mr. Albert Joczlk—A word to the wise is sufficient—Why carry on a feud? especially on a name—Verhovay it is, and Verhovay it will remain. Why Helen E. Vestrocy, what do you mean? Who told me—it shows in your writing—Loads of luck Helen—you are a swell kid. Glad to have you back with us Alex J. Goydan, instead of feeding the fishes—Your sister was sure worried about you when we visited Pittsburgh last Sept.— How about that Verhovay bowling Congress? Gentlemen in the Home Office—please note—We, also noticed—when ever Detroit issued challanges to bowl, they didn’t include Cleveland. What is the 'm,si ter gentlemen? Lorain, O. issued a challenge, but the date suggested was taken. Here’s hoping we can agree on a future date. So, you like our city, eh Mr. Young. To Mr. Elemer Hary—You condemn Mr. Young and then condemn his methods in your article —the pen is mightier then the sword—and the word CHEAP— is so—very ungentlemanly. Greetings and salutation to Mr. Joseph Taylor of Buffalo, N. Y.— The Verhovay Milk Dealer— you left us flat when we had our district meeting last—why? With a heavy heart, we announce the death of a member of branch 14, Mr. Andrew Galbos, owner of the popular “Night in Budapest Night Club.” He became seriously ill on New Year’s day and the following Frl day, was taken to the hospital, where he failed to rally after three blood transfusions had been administered to him in a desperate battle to stave off death. Arrangements for the funeral were handled by S. A. Jakab and Bros. 8923 Buckeye Rr„ Cleve., 0. Another fine Verhovay member. You’ve probably made (and already broken) oodles of resolutions. Oh well, we can all make them. Anyhow, who cares? Most people seldom practise what they preach anyhow. “THE WEATHER” Gosh, when it is Winter we can hardly wait for Summer. When the hot weather comes we long for the cold. Well, any day I’ll take a hot July day to a "zero weather” day. On January fifth we had a 2 above zero day. By January 6th (A. M.) it went up to 10' degrees. Finally, on January sixth (P. M.) it went up to 22, and we were glad. GOSSIP: Which would you rather do — or go fishing? Don’t do what Pete did. He went ice-skating, and fell in the ice. They had to ‘fish’’ him out, Do you walk to work or carry your lunch?
