border the middle part of the park by the edge of the nearly 2000 m2 pool. This rectangular pool is situated in the centre of the elongated belt parallel to the Danube bank. This part of the park offers quiet relaxation under three rows of trees consisting mainly of lindens and common catalpa. Outside the avenue by the pool grows a willow. Both the north and the south side of the pool are bordered by a mulberry hedge. The only protected species in the park is a tulip tree. VÉRHALOM SQÜARE A neighbourhood of villas surrounds this square situated between the Rózsadomb (Rose Hill) and Ferenc Hill. The bedrock of most of the area is Buda marl whereas the square itself is underlain by freshwater limestone. The name dates back to 1847 when Ferenc Hill was renamed Vérhalom (Blood Hill) by the Buda City Council. The Hungarian Prince László Hunyadi, who was perfidiously executed on March 16, 1457, was temporarily buried here until Mihály Szilágyi ordered the corpse to be transferred to Gyulafehérvár. The park on the square together with the playground was established in 1919. “Maternal love”, a statue by László Hűvös was erected here in 1937. Another sculpture, “Women protecting the fire” by Bálint Józsa was installed in 1968. Apart from the sculptures and the playground, the square which covers more than a hectare (12,097 m2), boasts something else which has not been found in the parks discussed so far-real rural calm. Regular visitors, obviously all from the neighborhood, apparently know one another well generating such a cozy atmosphere that one tends to forget the park is located in the middle of a metropolis. The rich mixture of the park consists of cedar, flowering ash, horse chestnut, several species of maple as well as a good deal of Tartarian honeysuckle, lilac, and spirea. The square is surrounded by attractive hackber- ries with pearl-patterned crust. Rómer Flóris utca and Vérhalom utca nearby are also bordered by hackberry trees. The feneketlen (BOTTOMLESS) LAKE PARK The area of this park is more than four hectares, or, more precisely 40,614 m2. It is bounded by Bartók Béla út, Villányi út, Edömér utca, Tass vezér utca and 29
