Buza Péter: Spring and Fountains - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1994)

From the naiads to the girl selling fish In the same period as the one which elapsed between the construction of the well-house and its first truncation-a period that we can precisely date now that the crucial facts are known-two more public fountains operated in the city of Pest. Terézváros [Theresa Town] was the first area in Pest to be provided with an ornamental public fountain. It stood outside the parish church, together with a sculpture of the Holy Trinity. It was made by Fidél Kasselik, the same master who designed the church. Work started in 1801 and was finished in 1805, by which time the neighbouring fire station had also been completed. At that time public fountains had to supply the water used by fire stations, which is why it was self-evident that the station should be built nearby. A prism-shaped base was built of blocks of stone brought from the city’s quarry in Kőbánya [which literally means stone quarry]. On the sides of the base there were gargoyles in the shape of lion heads. In The allegory of Peace cam once again be seen in Népliget 26
