Buza Péter: Spring and Fountains - Our Budapest (Budapest, 1994)

“The püblic fountain in the market place named after the Franciscan order...” the 1830s a more than two metre tall female figure by Mihály Bauer was placed on top of the fountain. The composition, which was a reproduction of Canova’s “Peace" and featured a woman treading on the snake of war and leaning on a bundle of sticks, managed to remain in its elevated position for nearly five years. Then, having deteriorated more than was deemed accept­able, it was replaced by an Empire style vase. In 1896 the whole structure was pulled down and moved to Népliget [People’s Grove], where the base has by now once again been supplemented with the Angel of Peace carved anew. The other decorative fountain serving the population of Pest in this early period made a more fortunate career than the one in Theresa Town. True enough, this was also relo­cated once, to Liget tér in Kőbánya, but now, carved anew, it adorns Ferenciek tere, its old location.
