274 EXCURSIONS AROUND THE TOWN The heraldic figure of Dunakeszi: St Michael's statue in the Main Square Dunakeszi........................................................ Dunakeszi used to belong to the Grassalkovich estate of Gödöllő, its inhabitants lived mainly on agriculture. Alag, which had been independent, was joined with Dunakeszi in 1950. The life of Dunakeszi was basically changed by the first Hungarian railway, which was opened in 1846.The railway central work­shop, which started operating here in the 1920s, was a determining factor in the life of the settlement, and a high-standard dwelling quarter of specifically de­signed character was built as part of the project. The only Hungarian racehorse training colony built by English pattern in 1890 also used to operate here.
