254 CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS, PROGRAMMES PROGRAMMES During past centuries the cultural life of the town was haséi on the spontaneous activities of its wealthy citizens and the presence of educational institutions. There were amateur school performances; due to the teaching of music, concerts became regular; lectures were held weekly to popularize scientific subjects. Catering establishments occasionally housed professional theatrical performances. From the igth century onwards the programmes were mainly organised by various associations and supported by the local government as well as the churches and some patrons. There were ballrooms, lecture halls, communal places available for the public. Several organizations offered substantial programmes; the demand for entertainment and culture usually went band in hand. In the middle of the zoth century this multicoloured community life faded. The scope of activity for state appointed cultural officials became limited. Associations were dissolved, the high standards of bourgeois lifestyle was preserved only by some sports clubs and culture groups. Gergely Bogányi (1974-) Pianist István Nagy B. Vác has always had several of them, both professionals and amateurs. The high standard of musical education is indicated by the large number of world-known musicians and singers who started their career in Vác. There are choirs, orchestras, theatrical workshops and dance groups in the town. Institutions of public education, public and private collections are open to visitors all year round, as well as exhibition places, concert and performing halls. Madách Imre Community Centre The main organizer of the local programmes is the Madách Imre Culture Centre.Their website gives information about their programmes In advance. Their offers cover the whole year, often connected to some other festival-like events in Budapest. The Spring Festival lasts from mid-March to the end of April. During this time arts exhibitions open and well-known artists and companies come to perform in Vác. The series of programmes called Summer in Vác offers entertainment until early autumn.
