Between 1900 and 1920 the population grew by 2971 people, I while between 1920 and 1939 the growth was much smaller, only 2003. Due to largescale construction both the quantity and the quality of the flats improved. However, the mayor did not conceal the fact that despite these constructions they had not been able to eliminate the slums where about fifty families lived. In the course of the constructions several new public buildings were built in Vác. In 1924 the new post office was opened on the former market square with a public park nearby. In 1925 the new tax office mansion and apartment block was also built Shell petrol station in Vác, 1930 in the newly parcelled area in Széchenyi Street. In 1930 the police station moved into a new building on Szentháromság (Holy Trinity) Square, to the former place of the Industrial Yard. The building of the railway station was also renovated: its facade was rebuilt in the middle of the 1930s. Outside the station hansom-cabs, later replaced by taxis, awaited travellers and visitors. Educational institutions were also remodelled and extended. The State Leather Trades and Gardening School for war orphans and later, children in care, started operating in the building of the former Kobrák Shoe Factory.
