VÁC IN THE 20TH CENTURY 173 was opened in Deákvár. In 1929 the new Lutheran Elementary School was built on the corner of the former market place. In 1939 the Karolina College of Commerce and Trade for Women was opened on St Miklós Square. Vác became a school town. The monuments of the town were also at­tended to. Amongst others the symbol of the town, the Stone Gate, a triumphal arch erected in honour of Maria Theresa's visit, was restored at that time. The Vác Museum Association played a consider­able part in preserving the relics of the past. A great many publications describing the history and the monuments of the town prove their relentless ef­forts to reinforce the healthy local patriotism of town citizens. The educational lectures of the Asso­ciation were extremely popular among the people Heroes'statue Ceremony at the Heroes' statue in Vác, who even erected a statue in honour of the president of the Association, Ignác Tragor. Back in 1896, during the millennial celebrations commemorating the founding of the Hungarian State, a park was built in the Main Square surround­ed by trees and a cast iron railing. It was named af­ter Bishop Konstantin Schuster. In the course of the rearrangement of the Main Square a monument commemorating the dead of the First World War by Károly Cser was erected here in 1933. Until the German occupation in 1944 town ceremonies and Heroes'Sundays were held here. The Main Square with the Heroes' statue raised in 1933
