We have received $3,200.00 in donations. The continuation of the Foundation fell back on my shoulders again. I am very grateful to those who continued their membership while it was in the hands of Mr. Pulit2er and after the transition. During the life-span of the Foundation, some members have made special donations in addition to their membership fee which made it possible to continue publication of the Eighth Hungarian Tribe magazine, and to organize the Heritage Conferences. This year's project was the Hungarian Eighth Tribe- Hungarian Americans Bumper Sticker (three color). We ordered 100, and to date have sold 53. Our cost with postage comes to $2.00, the price we are selling them for. The name "Hungarian Eighth Tribe" originated with Dr. Dezső Balthazar, Presiding Bishop of the Reformed Church of Hungary, on his visit to the United States in 1922. Dr. Balthazar called the Hungarian Americans the "Eighth Hungarian Tribe" (for those who may not know, Hungary was settled by the seven Magyar Tribes in the ninth century). He continued, saying that some day the Hungarian Americans will have a great responsibility to carry on the Hungarian name. The names for the magazine and for the Foundation were chosen by the third generation, who with their grand-parents and parents proudly called themselves the Eighth Hungarian Tribe/Nyolcadik Magyar Tfrzs, although this name is ridiculed and laughed at by many, and some even deny its existence when asked for a known Page 2 Hungarian organization promoting Hungarian Heritage. The odds of the Foundation becoming an effective organization are very slim. The Charter calls for the establishment of a Cultural Institute in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. To achieve this, the only alternative we have is to join Bethlen Home's project for such an Institute. If nothing else, we can have a wing, or a large room, carrying the foundation name, and have a place where we can house all the memorabilia donated to or owned by the Foundation. In the July-August issue of the Newsletter we noted a $500.00 donation toward this purpose. It is in a Savings Account at Commercial Bank, Ligonier. The Eighth Hungarian Tribe magazine, owned by the Bethlen Press (which ceased operation), was sold to Rakoczy Press-International, and after a few issues, the name was dropped. Since January 1986, the Foundation has been publishing a Newsletter every other month. Cost is $300.00 per issue, which covers printing and postage. Typesetting, make-up and mailing is voluntarily done. Many members have inquired,"When will the Newsletters be printed monthly again?" It is hard to predict when. Now, that all expenses have to be covered by the Foundation, renewal of memberships and donations regulate how often the Newsletter can be put out. It is heart-warming that all those who supported the magazine from the start and who also supported the Foundation, are still continuing their support, and are urging us not to give up the continuation of the Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation. The future of the HETF is up to the membership/friends of the Foundation. At this time I would like to reqjest that the Executive Officer be relieved of most of his current duties, for many times the spirit is willing, but the flesh says "slow-down." Sándor E.
