HUNGARIAN HISTORY-by-Anthony Endrey 1982 Hungarian Institute, Melbourne, Australia $22.00 This book, published in 1982, fills the need for an updated history of Hungary in the English language, and one which tells it like it was in the past and the way it really is today without ideological interpretations. According to the earliest Hungarian chronicles, the ancient Magyars were a free people and governed themselves as a community. It is the march of this community through history that the Author traces in this work. In 21 fascinating chapters, written in a vibrant yet learned style, the long and distinguished history of Hungarians is unfolded from the earliest times to the present. Through glorious ages and valiant struggles for freedom, the reader is led to the present captive condition of Hungary as a Communist satellite. Yet, accoring to Anthony Endrey, “the first rays of a great dawn are already piercing the clouds” and he ends his book on a hopeful note. This book is proudly presented by the Hungarian Institute of Melbourne, Australia, as the most up-to-date account of Hungarian history available in the English language. It is must reading for everyone interested in Hungaian history and Hungarian affairs. The qualifications of the Author are impeccable. Anthony Endrey is a former Hungarian lawyer and a Doctor of Laws of the University of Budapest. He was also a research student at the Friedrichs- Wilhelm University of Berlin, where his studies included South-Eastern European History and Geopolitics. After settling in Australia in 1949, he obtained a degree of Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honors at the University of Tasmania and is now practicing as a barrister in Melbourne. For some years, he acted as permanent legal adviser to one of the committees of the Australian Senate and subsequently held office as Master of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1975. In addition to his legal qualifications, Dr. Endrey has also published a number of historical works and is currently lecturing in Hungarian History at the Hungarian Institute of Melbourne, which he helped to establish. THE HUNGARIAN-AMERICANS-by-Steven Bela Vardy Duquesne University, Pittsburgh Twayne Publishers • Boston • 1985 $17.95 The first scholarly history of Hungarian-Americans in nearly four decades has just appeared in print. Authored by Dr. S. B. Vardy, Professor of History at Duquesne University and Adjunct Professor of East European History at the University of Pittsburgh, this work carries the history of the Hungarians in America from the 16th century right up to the 1980s. It pays particular attention to their social, cultural, religious, intellectual and political life, as i well as to the rise and functioning of their most significant organizations, institutions, and personalities. As noted by one of the professional readers of this work, “Professor Vardy’s manuscript is a most reliable, scholarly, yet eminently readable history of the Hungarian-Americans and their achievements.” As observed by another reviewer, “the book’s special merit is that for the first time in American scholarship, it summarizes the history and inner life of the post-World War II immigrants from Hungary, including the DP’s, the 47-ers, the 56-ers, and those who came after them in the course of the past quarter century. It is an accurate, informative and enjoyable work that should be in the library of every American and Hungarian-American , THE BQQK m m By ANTHONY KOMJÁTHY $20.00 THE EARLY HUNGARIANS V* By TIBOR E.
