With only 30 men under his command, Benyovszky fought the invaders off until a cannon ball brought him down mortally wounded. He died of it in 1786 at the age of 45. Somewhere out there on the island of Madagascar there are two unmarked graves. One contains the mortal remains of the Hungarian Empress of Madagascar and first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The other contains the mortal remains of the Hungarian Emperor of Madagascar, whose epitaph could read: “Here rests in peace the Hungarian Emperor of Madagascar, who was a great military commander, sailor, linguist, diplomat, philosopher, hunter, and chess master”!
