THE "MOTHER OF EXILES" NEEDS THE HELP OF HER HUNGARIAN-AMERICANS! The Statue of Liberty has been our country's symbol of freedom and hope for almost 100 years. So has Ellis Island, where the ancestors of nearly 50% of all Americans, including our Hungarian parents, grandparents, and exiles, first stepped on American soil after being warmly welcomed by the "Mother of Exiles" standing so proudly on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Both of these symbols of what America stands for throughout the world were allowed to fall into decay. But now, thanks to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Commission, they are in the process of restoration at a cost of $230,000,000. The cost of restoring the "Mother of Exiles" and converting Ellis Island into a"LIVINC MEMORIAL" to the millions of immigrants who came to America to find a better way of life and who helped to build this great Nation of ours, must be covered by private donations, because the Federal Government is not providing the funds. This is consistent with the Statue of Liberty's origins, for it was the French and American people themselves whose contributions financed its construction, while it was a Hungarian who helped to raise the money needed for its erection. Let's remember: the Torch of Liberty is everyone's to cherish. Could we hold up our heads as Hungarian-Americans if we allowed the time to come when she, the "Mother of Exiles," can no longer hold up hersf THE UNITED HUNGARIAN-AME RICAN COMMITTEE FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY ELLIS ISLAND IS RESPONDING •Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation • Eighth Hungarian Tribe Magazine • American-Hungarian Citizens Club of Rahway • Hungarian Reformed Federation of America • Hungarian Reformed Church in America • Eastern Area Elders Association • Hungarian Charitable Association •William Penn Fraternal Association (No. 129) • The Rákóczi Foundation • American-Hungarian Literary Guild •Free Magyar Reformed Church (Linden) •Hungarian Reformed Church (Perth Amboy) • Bethlehem Magyar Presbyterian Church • Assumption R.C.
