PROFILES IN FOCUS — by - Paul Pulitzer Mary Mochary: New Jersey’s Hungarian Candidate for the United States Senate The Honorable Mary Mochary, Mayor of the City of Montclair, New Jersey and a candidate for election to the United States Senate. American-Hungarians in New Jersey will soon have an opportunity to demonstrate that their “Hungarianism” means much more to them than political parttisanship. For once, they will have a chance to cast aside the political differences which fracture them into segments in opposition and become united in one cause in common: to help elect an American-Hungarian to the United States Senate! The outstanding American-Hungarian meriting the unified support of all American-Hungarians in the State of New Jersey, regardless of political party loyalties or affiliations, is the HONORABLE MARY MOCHARY,the Mayor of the City of Montclair and the Republican challenger for the Senate seat held by Democrat Bill Bradley. Of Hungarian parentage, her achievements have been so remarkable that the New Jersey Press has described her as “a textbook example of the American Woman’s Dream.” A successful politician, lawyer, and business woman, she stands tall among those towards whom all American-Hungarians can point with pride as a living example of their heritage and as a symbol of the Hungarian contribution to America. Mary Mochary attended Wellesley College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics. Fluent in six languages, including Hungarian, German, French, Spanish, and Italian, she went to work in 1963 as a Translator for the Bank of America. This did not mean, however, that she did not continue her education. For, in 1967, she graduated from the University of Chicago Law School and, three years later, became a member of the New Jersey Bar specializing in Real Estate Law and Investments. She is now a partner in the Montclair-based law firm of Cerny & Mochary, which is an Affiliate of the New York firm of Lane & Mittendorf. Page 12 She is also a very successful business woman with extensive interests in real estate. The first time she ever ran for public office, which was in 1980, Mary Mochary won. She was the first woman in the history of the City of Montclair to be elected Mayor. Since then, she has done a great deal to improve conditions in her city and has provided it with a municipal government that is responsive to the needs of its residents. However, she does not believe in dual officeholding, like the Mayors of several other New Jersey cities who also serve in the State Senate, and for this reason will not run for re-election this year. “I know I can get re-elected,” she explained, “but I don’t think it’s fair to run for re-election and then go off and campaign for the United States Senate.” In addition to her many time-consuming duties as the Mayor of a city having a population of about 40,000, her law practice, and her business interests, Mary Mochary somehow finds time for other activities as well. She is on the Board of Directors of numerous organizations, a founding member of the New Jersey Theater Foundation and the National Conference of Women Mayors, a member of the Governor’s Job Training Coordinating Council, and served for three years as the Chairman of the March of Dimes. But, that is not all. She is also married and has two teen-age children. She also happens to be one of the few American-Hungarians listed in the “Who’s Who of American Women” and has been in it since 1975. Come election time this year, why not vote “Hungarian?’ Vote for Mary Mochary! Eighth Hungarian Tribe
