MAGYAR READER By Endre Sebestyén The lessons given in the Reader have been so prepared that they form a continous whole. It follows from this that complete mastery of each and every lesson is an indispensable requirement to satisfactory progress. In other words, When we speak, we put our thoughts into spoken words. Our words are made up of a number of sounds, which we utter when we are speaking. When, on the other hand, we write, we use certain signs, which we call letters, to put into written form what we said in our spoken words. In the Magyar language forty-one signs, or letters, are being used fgr this purpose. Each letter marks a certain sound, and each sound is always expressed by the same letter, so that the spoken form and the written form of the Magyar words always are in complete agreement with one another. It means, in other words, that by learning the fortyone letters of the Magyar alphabet, we are enabled to write down every Magyar word we hear. Equally simple is the matter of pronounciation. Having once learned the forty-one letters of the Magyar alphabet, even a child can pronounce every Magyar word, and can read any Magyar text with no difficulty whatever. Disregarding the letters which, both in English and Magyar are used in the same manner, let us review those letters of the Magyar alphabet, which demand special treatment. LESSON ONE ELSŐ LECKE a A The Magyar a is pronounced as the letter a is pronounced in the English words: ball, hall, tall. It, as every Magyar letter, should be pronounced clearly, and distinctly. The words given above should be read aloud several limes. The words are divided into syllables. In Ike Magyar language the accent always falls on the first syllable.
