June, 1981 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page 13 The Forty-Third Annual Meeting of the Calvin Synod Newly elected officers of the Calvin Synod: Dr. Francis Vitéz, Deputy Bishop; Dr. John Biitösi, Bishop; Rev. Kálmán The Calvin Synod held their annual meeting on April 27, 1981, in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Thirty-nine churches were represented with seventy-five people attending. The Calvin Synod is part of the United Church of Christ, representing thirty-nine congregations of the Hungarian Reformed Faith from ten states. The new officers,elected for the next two years are: Bishop — Rt. Rev. Dr. John Biitösi, Bridgeport, CT; Deputy Bishop — Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz, Perth Amboy, NJ; Secretary — Rev. Steven Nagy, Columbus, OH; Treasurer — Rev. Kálmán Ludwig, Hammond, IN. Elmer Charles of Sprin'gfield, PA, (president of the William Penn Association) was elected Synod Chief Presbyter. Previous to 1971, the chief officer had been called “President”. Since then, he has been called “Bishop”, as his position is called in Hungary. The only difference, that in Hungary he is elected for life, here he is elected for only a two year term, but may be re-elected twice. He may also be elected Bishop again, as long as a term has passed when he was not Bishop. Dr. John Biitösi, the man elected Bishop, was born in Nyirgyulaj, Szabolcs megye, Hungary, received his theological degree in Debrecen, and immigrated to the United States in 1947. He received his mastePs deegre at Printeton and his doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh. Ludwig, Treasurer; Rev. Steven Nagy, Secretary and Mr. Elmer Charles, Synod Chief Presbyter. Also, honored at the banquet Tuesday evening, was Rt. Rev. Árpád George, for his distinguished service as President of the Synod, and as President of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. Rt. Rev. Dr. Desmond Parragh, Bishop for the previous term, made the presentation. — Paul Kántor The Rt. Rev.
