Page 14 THE EIGHTH TRIBE June, 1981 THE BUDAPEST PAPRIKÁS SUNDAY IN ALLEN PARK, MICHIGAN The idea to have a special Sunday afternoon in fellowship with good music appealed to many people in the various Churches, but it was made clear to me, when I read in an old magazine about such a friendly gathering first occuring in 1929 in Budapest when such a day was celebrated upon completion of a film “Csak egy Kislány”. Here in America, to bring together our second and third generation Hungarians is becoming more and more difficult. When people move from the old churches and neighborhoods to the various jobs they perform far away from the place where they grew up, the family problems and the complex issues of our modern every-day life, it is understandable that we cherish those traditions of our forefathers, to celebrate a successful accomplishment. The Committee worked very diligently from the beginning to the date May 31st, when our First Budapest Paprikás Sunday was scheduled. Two organizations of our Hungarian1 Reformed Church with their members were behind the event — The Golden Circle Club and The Dorcas Guild. We set out to move the community in' Detroit and vicinity to let everyone know that they may spend a Sunday afternoon in the atmosphere of congenial music and songs. The two radio stations, Mrs. Ernest Palos on WMZK, 1400 AM, and a friendly Canadian Radio announcer, Mr. Sándor Orosz, on CHYR, as well as the Melius Newspapers which cover the entire “Downriver” area of Detroit, carried our invitation to the thouands who listen regularly to the Hungarian radio and read faithfully the newspaper. Music was provided by Király Ernő and his orchestra from Cleveland, Ohio. Alex Udvardy played the cimbalom, Joe Jeromos sang the songs in' English and Hungarian. The Church auditorium filled to capacity with 400 people enjoyed every moment of this delightful Sunday afternoon. The excellent chicken paprikás was prepared by the Ladies of the Dorcas Guild. The question upon the lips of those in attendance was when will the next Paprikás Sunday be???
